After years of trade rumors involving the failed (so far) receiver from Arizona State, N’Keal Harry has been traded to the Bears for a 7th round 2024 pick.
Patriots
The pros for this trade is they get something for a distressed asset, the rest is all cons. New England gets to add to their terrible history of drafting receivers. Especially if they were a high draft pick.
When he was drafted in 2019 at 32, the Patriots passed on four future pro bowl receivers. Deebo Samuel (All-Pro), A.J. Brown, D.K. Metcalf and Hunter Renfrow. Also two players everybody views as talented in Terry McLaurin and Darius Slayton.
Not only did they fail in their evaluation of Harry, they also failed in how they viewed the other receivers I mentioned. The selection further illuminates how hard drafting is and how even the best organizations lose in the first round.
Bears
The pros for the Bears is they get to take a chance on someone at least one team viewed as a first round talent. With no consequences! Receiver is a need for second year quarterback Justin Fields and every contribution matters.
This trade gives them another red zone threat to go along with tight ends Cole Kmet and Jimmy Graham. Harry also is a great blocker, which is a necessity in Chicago, especially in the later months of the season and the playoffs.
Also if there’s one weakness defensively for their division rivals it’s their secondaries. The Detroit Lions best option at corner is failed number two pick (so far) corner Jeff Okudah. While, the Vikings have to rely on past his prime veteran Patrick Peterson.
The Packers are the only one with a competent secondary. Why not take advantage of the other two teams in the NFC North?
