BREAKING: Green Bay Packers Reportedly Shows Interest in Signing Free Agent Cornerback

It seems like the Green Bay Packers need secondary help suddenly, just days after the trade deadline.

Packers’ cornerback room just got brutally thin after Nate Hobbs went down with a Grade 1 MCL sprain that will sideline him for at least two weeks. The $48 million man has struggled when healthy. Now the depth chart looks scary thin behind starters Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine.

So, the front office is reportedly pursuing to sign an elite free agent cornerback available right now.

Packers Reportedly Pursuing Star Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr

According to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, the Packers are pursuing free-agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. The second-round pick from the 2021 NFL Draft just got the green light from doctors after undergoing spinal fusion surgery. With him now being cleared for football activity, they started showing their serious interest.

Surprisingly, Matt LaFleur’s team didn’t make any moves at this year’s trade deadline. Now they see the urgent need for someone responsible for the CB room. Samuel represents a low-risk, high-reward player for a secondary that’s generated zero interceptions from its starting trio this season.

Samuel visited the Panthers and will go to the Packers on Thursday, the Vikings on Friday, the 49ers on Monday, the Bears the next day, and the Steelers on Wednesday of next week. He will be the hottest name on the free-agent market across the week.

But Packer needs to win Samuel in his busy week because their CB room is plagued with injuries. Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentin could be the short-term replacements for Hobbs, but they are in no way close to what Samuel can bring to the table.

For the unversed, Nixon has been a penalty machine this year. He’s been flagged 10 times, the most in the league, with seven accepted for 52 yards. Valentine’s sheet is also underwhelming against what Green Bay needs.

Samuel has 176 tackles and six interceptions in 50 career games since being drafted by the Chargers. His first three seasons were promising enough before the injury nightmare derailed his production.

So, he must want to rebuild his reputation before hitting free agency again in 2026. He’s coming off a $7.2 million rookie contract. A strong second-half performance could net him a massive payday next offseason.

Since six teams want him, he will likely get the chance easily. But Green Bay needs to close the deal before he boards a plane to Minnesota on Friday.
