Yet Another Injustice of the Rankings System
After the Notre Dame Fighting Irish put up one hell of a fight against arguably one of the best teams in College Football, you’d think we would find ourselves a couple slots down. NOPE. Now, here we are behind a handful of teams which had a cake-walk in Week 1.
Welcome to the world of College Football in the BCS era. It’s either perfection, or go home. It’s like pinning an underdog against the prized fighter, then completely dismissing the underdog after an expected loss. I mean, we beat the spread – so why such a devastating fall?
I blame history. The Coaches Poll seems to follow a very systematic pattern every year. Place the Fighting Irish high in the pre-season, then slowly count them out once they lose a game. Meanwhile, if (let’s say) ALABAMA lost a game against Ohio State, they would be #2! Call me biased, but I say it’s unfair.
No one expected us to win that game. And we almost did! Consider this an outcry to the rankings system, and a plea to make the 12 team playoff a reality sooner than later. The system is flawed. Maybe that’s just my inner fanhood speaking, but I think most of us would agree here.
We beat the spread for crying out loud – and you’re punishing us? Point and case that College Football has an inherent flaw – it’s a popularity contest. And, unfortunately – ND falls in the “love or hate” category. This week says… HATE.
It’s going to be an uphill battle, but after what I saw in Week 1…
But, here’s to looking on the bright side. It’s a long season, and we’re only in Week 2. Notre Dame’s schedule moving forward features games that should be a shoe-win, and a couple of games left to prove our status among the big-dogs (Clemson, USC, and BYU). In other words, if we win out – which is highly possible – there’s no way the committee can turn down an 11-1 Notre Dame team that barely lost to OSU.
I believe it can happen. Let’s shock the system, and prove it wrong.

I don’t think Notre Dame can complain about unfairness in the polls/rankings after they were given a Playoff spot in 2020. BTW, we’re in the CFP era now, not the BCS, I *wish* we were back in the BCS era when perfection was a requirement to play for the national title.
