After last week’s competitive, but ultimately unsuccessful home outing against the red-hot Detroit Lions (words I never thought I would ever write – or utter), the Los Angeles Chargers, and head coach, Brandon Staley, have been searching for solutions. Their prime, top-10 quarterback, Justin Herbert, played lights out against a Detroit Lions defence that ranks 9th in defensive DVOA. He threw for 323 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception, all for the highly impressive quarterback rating of 114.9.
However, despite having spent some of the most money by any team in the NFL on the defensive side of the ball, the team is still well – trash – defensively. As a result, the playcalling – and job – of Brandon Staley is being called into question, leading many to think he would take a step back from playcalling duties to focus on the functioning of the rest of the team. However, this in fact, will not be the case, per Underdog NFL.
HC Staley said he’ll continue to call defensive plays for the Chargers.

What Is Next For The Los Angeles Chargers Defence?
Despite boasting some of the top players at their respective positions, including All-Pros Joey Bosa and Derwin James, alongside former Defensive Player of the Year, Khalil Mack – the Los Angeles Chargers have not performed well at all defensively this season, ranking 31st in Total Yards (so 2nd worst) and 27th in defensive DVOA .
So even with a defensive minded head coach, excellent personnel on the defensive side of the ball, it seems as if the Chargers cannot sort out a problem that only they could have put themselves into. After having done the seemingly bizarre and embarrassing act of having to apologize for a defensive signing, the Los Angeles Chargers are in a weird spot of being competitive on paper, but in reality are joint last in their division standings, alongside the rapidly improving Denver Broncos, who are off back-to-back wins against AFC heavyweights, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.
Let’s see if the Los Angeles Chargers can right the ship and get their season going again at Lambeau Field, facing a less-than-impressive 3-6 Green Bay side that has struggled on both sides of the ball.
