Yesterday, Gridiron reported that the Big 12 would likely add four Pac-12 programs within the week following discussions and a meeting held today. We can now confirm that the Big 12 is in serious conversation to add two additional programs from the Pac-12.
Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, & Colorado already began discussions with the Big 12 about possible expansion to the conference. However, reports are saying that Oregon & Washington have been added to the list and the ongoing conversations are deep & serious.
The Big 12 has multiple sources confirming its aggressive pursuit of new members. According to CBS, a Big 12 source claimed “Everything is on the table,” in regards to several expansion opportunities. Including a Big 12 & Pac-12 merger.

Expect an announcement from the Big 12 within the week
The Big 12 is likely to add the four teams originally in the discussion. We can expect an announcement within the week & from here things might become a little hectic. Media rights deals are the center of attention. The primary reasons for the SEC & Big Ten moves were due to media contracts. The Big 12’s hire of Brett Yormark was focused on obtaining a strong TV rights deal.
The issue with Oregon & Washington, who throughout, have favored a move to the Big 10, is waiting on a decision from Notre Dame. According to SI, despite a $20 million revenue boost by joining the Big 10, Notre Dame would prefer to remain independent. Which leaves Oregon & Washington waiting. The question is, how long are they willing to stand by? With the programs now entering into conversation with the Big 12, it seems their patience is running thin.
If all six teams make the move, it would bolster the Big 12 into three time zones. In addition, increase its member count from 12 to 18. Even without Oregon & Washington, it is still expected that the original four programs, Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, & Colorado, will join the Big 12 very soon.
The Pac-12’s projected AAV dropped significantly from $500 million annually (approximately $42 million per school) to $300 million ($30 million) for the remaining 10 teams after the league lost USC and UCLA, according to the San Jose Mercury News & CBS
Everything is playing into the Big 12’s hands. The conference looked like it was on its last leg. Now, it looks to become a third player in the super conference race.
