The Staley led Los Angeles Chargers head in to Week 3 with a 1-1 record. However, some fans really believe they should be 2-0 based on how they played on Thursday Night. In a very competitive game on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs, a 99yd pick six was ultimately the difference in the game. There’s been a lot of speculation of who was at fault in this situation. Was it Justin Herbert making a bad throw or Gerald Everett running a bad route? It seems we now have further clarity on what really happened.
Staley addresses the Issue
Brandon Staley spoke to the media on Wednesday and addressed what happened via Chargers.Content on Instagram. “ I saw Gerald, we felt like we could keep him in and dictate the pace of that, it was simple play a simple job assignment”. “In retrospect it is something we can all learn from operationally, me most of all and it’s on me for what happened on that play ”.
There have been a lot of questions about Brandon Staley’s coaching decisions since becoming a head coach. In the last two games against the Chiefs, an argument can be made the Chargers outplayed them both times. Yet somehow the Chargers are the team that ended up with a loss. That very well could just be the result of having to face Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. But if the Chargers have goals of being a Super Bowl team, they have to find a way to come out of those games with a win.
These are the games that make a difference in winning a division or missing the playoffs. Even the loss in the Week 18 matchup against the Raiders could’ve potentially been avoided with better coaching. However, it is still early in his second year and a very long season. Staley has shown he will hold himself accountable when need be. Let’s just hope the lessons he’s learned can generate into progress sooner than later.
