The San Francisco 49ers have devastating news on Monday before the team prepares for a crucial matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers dropped a 28-18 game at home to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, which puts San Francisco’s record at 3-4 after seven weeks.
A must-win game for the San Football 49ers in Week 8
The 49ers face a must-win game against the Cowboys in Week 8. After playing a 3-3 Dallas team San Football will head into their bye. From Nov. 10 through Dec. 8, the 49ers will play the 4-2 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 4-3 Seattle Seahawks, 5-2 Green Bay Packers, 5-2 Buffalo Bills, and 4-2 Chicago Bears.
Essentially, the 49ers are in real trouble of being out of the NFC wild card race by Christmas if they don’t pick up a win against Dallas.
Brandon Aiyuk is out for the season
The double-digit loss to the Chiefs might have been psychologically demoralizing, but it was also costly in another way. Star receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a knee injury in the second quarter. Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, tests Monday confirmed head coach Kyle Shanahan’s feat that Aiyuk suffered a season-ending injury against the Chiefs.

Could Brock Purdy be traded amid the disastrous 2024 season?
Per Mike Sando of The Athletic, some NFL executives believe the 49ers are at a crossroads this week. There is chatter in the league that San Francisco could trade quarterback Brock Purdy, and that move could come before the Nov. 5 deadline if the team doesn’t think it has a realistic chance of making the playoffs. Essentially, the 49ers could start to shed its roster of aging players at the trade deadline as well and kickstart a rebuild in San Francisco if they can’t notch a win over the Cowboys in Week 8.
Maybe if the 49ers can grab a win, San Francisco could throw a hail mary on the season and trade for one of a handful of wide receivers on the trade block in October.
Aiyuk’s season-ending injury doesn’t make the 49ers’ prospects of playing meaningful games in January more hopeful before the trade deadline.
