Brandin Cooks talked about the Houston Texans Week 18 last season
The Houston Texans came into Week 18 in sole control of the 2023 NFL Draft. All the Texans needed to do was fold against their AFC South rival, the Indianapolis Colts, they’d own the number one pick in April. But the Texans pulled off a comeback victory on their final offensive drive to finish 3-13-1 for the season–thus giving them the 31st-best record in the league for 2022. Former Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks opened up about the team’s mentality during the game.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Cooks said on Adam Schefter’s podcast said he and his teammates didn’t care about draft position:
“Well, you never suit up to lose, right? And so you know that No. 1 pick is out there, but at the end of the day, you go out between those white lines you’re putting out your resume, so as a competitor you’re not going out there saying ‘I’m not going to give them my all because I want the Texans to have the No. 1 pick.
‘ You go out there, you give it your all, and let the chips fall where they fall, and they just happen to be one of those situations where it was a nail bitter, and most people were probably like, ‘Wait, why are you guys winning?’ We don’t play to lose, at least from a player’s standpoint.”
The Texans’ draft position doesn’t matter to Cooks now, as the Texans traded him to the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.
