Thank you all for reading my work in the first week of the NFL season. In this article I will conduct my NFL Week One DFS Autopsy. I’ll break down what went right, what went alright, and what went horribly wrong.
The Good
- Patrick Mahomes was my most heavily owned QB, and he did not disappoint. He was the highest scoring QB on the NFL Week One DFS slate, and the GPP optimal lineup QB.
- Devante Adams does indeed look like he will be worth the price of admission, especially in trailing game scripts. He was the 2nd highest scoring WR on the slate.
- I have a man crush on Ja’Marr Chase. He caught one TD, but if you watched the game, he actually caught like four, but only one counted.
- Michael Pittman looks like he will continue the trend of Matt Ryan heavily targeting his WR1.
- Travis Kelce’s reign as TE1 is not over.
- AJ Brown is a force, especially against sub par CBs when he has a massive weight advantage.
- Jalen Hurts “only” scored 24.72 DK points. It was not enough to win a GPP, just like I said.
- D’Andre Swift was the 3rd highest scoring RB on the slate despite Jamaal Williams vulturing not one but two TDs from him.
- The Dolphins defense was a home run. They ended up being the most heavily owned defense, which I didn’t see coming, but their fantasy output was more than enough to make you money.
- The Commander defense was the second highest owned defense, they scored 4 points.
- Christian Kirk went over 100 yards receiving and was in the optimal lineup.
The Neutral
- Lamar Jackson was my second highest owned QB. He didn’t suck, but he also didn’t run like I thought he would. The Jets also didn’t show up like I thought the would. In any event, Lamar’s point total was not enough to capture a GPP.
- Justin Herbert did fine as well, but not enough for a first place finish.
- I mentioned Clyde Edwards-Helaire, but didn’t see as a viable pairing with Mahomes. I did have lineups with him and Mahomes, but enough to make some serious $.
- James Conner was okay, I expected more though.
- Jahan Dotson caught 2 TDs. While that is exciting, he only caught 3 passes overall. F1 also caught a long TD to salvage his day.
- Jonathan Taylor was neither a good nor a miss. Despite his output, he was not in the optimal lineup. Sometime a player is just priced too high. That being said, if you played him and a few other good pieces, you likely made some $.
- I didn’t miss on Antonio Gibson. He got to his point because he had 7 catches. That’s because he’s a receiver.
The Straight Misses
- Saquon Barkley was the biggest miss of the day for me, He was only 15% owned and not as I high as I thought. Additionally, HC Brian Daboll seemed pretty irritated with his QB late in the game, so force feeding his talented RB is understandable. I’m happy for Saquon as he has had some *!%# luck since being in the league, but I’ll admit
- The Steelers defense. The Bengals offensive line was supposed to be better!! This definitely needs some research on my part.
- Travis Etienne was over thrown by Lawrence in the end zone. Then on an open walk in TD, Etienne randomly started treating the football like a basketball and it was ruled an incomplete pass. Then on a 3rd potential opportunity to take it to the house, Etienne fumbled the ball out of bounds. Thanks Etienne, now James Robinson is a thing again. FML.
- I honestly didn’t watch much of the game, but I need to figure out why Kamara did not have a better day.
- Jarvis Landry had a 7 catch, 100 yard day. Pretty sure no one knows that.
- Robbie (or Robby?) Anderson.
- Michael Thomas caught 2 TDs. He was not on my radar.
- Darnell Mooney was barely targeted. The game was heavily influenced by weather, but I’m marginally concerned.
- Wan’Dale Robinson got hurt. I’m sorry, but predicting injuries is not easy.
Enigmas
- Cordarelle Patterson continues to be a gigantic pain in the rear.
- Who the heck knew Dontrell Hillaird would be involved as he is? The answer is no one. No. One.
- The Browns backfield just upsets me at this point. I don’t like Baker, but somehow I’m completely unsatisfied by the result of this game.
- Taysom Hill just won’t go away.
- What’s a Greg Dortch?
