The 20th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers have been cruising, and one reason why has been the production from defensive back Boo Carter. However, he has been dealing with a hip injury as well as some disciplinary issues with the program. On Sunday, things have escalated to a breaking point. Let’s take a deeper dive into what happened
Boo Carter Entering Transfer Portal

Boo Carter took to social media himself to announce he is entering the 2025 NCAA Transfer Portal:
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank The University of Tennessee Coaches, administrators and fans fo a wonderful 2 years. Unfortunately my season has been cut short due to injury. I have decided to enter the transfer portal and I am excited about the opportunities going forward.”
This comes after Saturday where coach Josh Heupel was asked about Carter’s status and he gave a significant answer that made today’s update not too surprising:
“At the end of the day, there’s a standard you’ve got to meet to be in that locker room and so he was not out on the field with us,” Heupel said. “That’ll be my last response to anything related to that for right now.”
Carter has not been short of controversy with the Vols this season, as it was reported that he missed multiple practices while remaining with the program. However, he has shown the ability to be a star when on the field, as the sophomore played in nine games (zero starts) before suffering a hip injury against the Kentucky Wildcats.
He finishes the season with 25 total tackles (16 solo, nine assisted), one sack, three pass deflections, and a SEC-leading three forced fumbles. Carter certainly has an incredible amount of talent, so it will be intriguing to see where the former four-star athlete will be playing in 2026 and beyond.
