A tweet on Tuesday from ESPN’s Chris Low gave a bit of an update on Carter’s situation and let people know that coach Heupel would be discussing the situation later in the day.
“Lotta speculation about the future of Tennessee DB Boo Carter the last two weeks after he missed multiple workouts, but sources tell ESPN that Carter is not being dismissed from the team. Coach Josh Heupel will address the situation at his press conference later Tuesday.”
Coach Heupel would provide a brief comment about Carter’s situation, confirming Low’s report of him remaining with the Vols.
“Boo is a part of our team here. There’s some things he’s got to accomplish to get back on the field here. Don’t have a timetable with that.”
Carter had a strong freshman season as he was named to the SEC All-Freshman team after playing in all 13 games (five starts). The defensive back recorded 38 tackles, a sack, three quarterback hurries, three tackles for loss, and an interception. He was expected to get an expanded role for the Vols this season to the point he was even jumping in on offense as a slot receiver.
The problem is not known, but Carter did receive a new NIL deal in December after the season. There are reports that he requested to go into the NCAA Transfer Portal in the spring before deciding to cancel his request before the spring window closed.
Now, it will be interesting to see how the Tennessee Volunteers treat this situation with the talented member of their secondary.
