On Tuesday morning, the Denver Broncos revealed a surprise on the quarterback depth chart heading into the preseason. The Broncos will play their first preseason game of the summer on Saturday when they take on the Indianapolis Colts.
Zach Wilson appeared to be on his way to QB3
The preseason game will be important for the coaching staff to evaluate their three-way quarterback battle. As previously discussed on GH, Zach Wilson appeared to be falling behind in the race:
According to Nick Kosmider with The Athletic, Wilson has had good moments in training camp. Still, he’s been too inconsistent with deep-ball accuracy and has issues adapting to pressure. He’s falling out of the race for the QB1 job, as Wilson isn’t getting enough reps with the first team to stay in contention with Nix and Stidham:
“Broncos coach Sean Payton hasn’t announced it officially, but Zach Wilson has fallen out of the race for the starting job. Wilson, acquired in a trade with the Jets in April, has had only one turn with the first-team offense in 10 practices. That came more than one week ago. Rookie Bo Nix and veteran holdover Jarrett Stidham took turns running the top offense in the other nine practices.”
The Denver Broncos name Jarrett Stidham the QB1
Kosmider’s observations are slightly different from what the Broncos told the public on Tuesday. Per the Broncos’ initial “unofficial” depth chart release, Bo Nix is penciled in as the QB3.
The Broncos list Jarrett Stidham as their QB1. Wilson is the QB2.
Stidham had the head start on the QB1 job heading into the offseason. Since he played in Denver last year, Studham is more familiar with the offense. Wilson has shown the most talent this offseason, but he’s been too inconsistent in his deep-ball passing and knowledge of the offense to eclipse Stidham.
Bo Nix is a surprise at QB3
Nix is the Broncos’ starting quarterback of the future. However, the Broncos aren’t ready to give him the QB1 job in his first preseason game. It’s surprising they have Nix behind Wilson on the depth chart for the QB2 gig. However, the Broncos have plenty of time to ramp up Nix’s responsibilities this month as the former Oregon standout transitions to the NFL.
