In this season, the Bills had a significant setback in their WR performance curve. This was clearly visible in their face-off against Houston, where they had an unexpected 12 points. Meanwhile, the offense has slipped into a pattern of short drives and missed opportunities. Thus, the Bills are actively searching for someone who could stretch the field. Then their attention shifted to Cooks.

Even when his role shrank in New Orleans, Cooks still brought experience and high speed. However, his 2025 numbers were low. He just posted 19 catches for 165 yards with no touchdowns. Plus, he failed to top 26 yards in any game. Still, Buffalo believes the traits remain. He averaged 9.24 air yards per attempt on 25 opportunities this season. His usage dipped, but his vertical history matters for a Bills team that ranks in the top ten in passing yards yet lacks an actual downfield threat.

Then there is Josh Allen’s recent dip. He has thrown for under 215 yards in five of eleven starts. Curtis Samuel didn’t play in Week 12 due to an elbow plus neck trouble. Mecole Hardman stayed out because of a sore calf. Keon Coleman, picked in the second round back in 2024, was left off the roster again despite being fit. With those guys gone, Khalil Shakir’s had more work – he’s tops on Buffalo with 564 yards yet sits just 32nd across the NFL.

So the Bills added another piece. It gives them seven active receivers and Gabe Davis on the practice squad. Cooks becomes the sixth team of his career, and he now sits at 9,697 yards and 60 touchdowns. He hit eight touchdowns two seasons ago in Dallas and was still a red zone threat. Buffalo hopes that upside flashes again.
