Ever since benching current starter, Mac Jones, prior to the final game drive against the Indianapolis Colts – and just after another dreadful interception against a very poor, injured Colts secondary – head coach Bill Belichick has been coy about the future of Mac Jones status as the starter, and of the quarterback position in general for the remainder of the season Now, per Adam Schefter, it looks like Belichick once again is keeping his cards close to his chest.
Asked this morning who would be the Patriots’ starting QB on Sunday vs. the Giants, Bill Belichick said: “I’ve told everybody to be ready to go. … I’ve told every player to be ready to play.”

What Does This Mean For The New England Patriots’ Offence Going Forward?
Up until now, the New England Patriots have started incumbent Mac Jones in every single game this season. In fact, outside of injury and a sole, predetermined early game benching in the Patriots’ Monday Night loss to the Chicago Bears in 2022, he has started every game for the New England Patriots possible over the past 2 years.
And despite an encouraging rookie season where Jones lead the team to a playoff-earning 10-7 record in 2021, where they were subsequently blown out by the Buffalo Bills in the wild card round, Jones has performed sub-par these past couple of years. He has attained mediocre season passer ratings of 84.8 in 2022, regressing to 80.2 this season. including only 1 game with a passer rating over 100, and only 2 above 90 through Week 11.
Suffice to say Jones’ performance has not been anywhere near good enough for the duration of this time and the patriots’ miserly 2-8 record on the season demonstrates this.
In line to replace Mac Jones this weekend against the New York Giants are Bailey Zappe, who threw one of the strangest game clinching ending against the Indianopolis Colts in Week 10, or rookie undrafted free agent Malik Cunningham, who showed a lot of promise in the preseason.
Regardless of who starts, the New England Patriots will need substantially more dynamic playmaking from the quarterback position in order to get their season on track otherwise fans will be spending a lock of time on Tankathon.
