Author’s Note: These are not the official Big Ten Players of the Week, but my Big Ten Players of the Week as a writer for Gridiron Heroics.
Co-Offensive Players of the Week:
Nicholas Singleton, Penn State, Running Back, Freshman.
This guy is the best running back Penn State has had since some guy named Saquon Barkley, who I hear was ok (Sarcasm, Barkley is the Penn State GOAT at running back). On only 10 carries Singleton had 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. On the road, in an SEC school’s house, as a true freshman. The sky is the limit for this guy in State College, and the rest of the Big Ten is taking notice.
C.J. Stroud, Ohio State, Quarterback, Junior. Stroud was 22 of 27 for 367 yards and 5 touchdown passes. He had as many touchdown passes as he did incompletions. Stroud is doing what is expected of him, making throws in tight windows that most coaches would scream at their quarterback to never throw in the first place. It’s what happens when you throw over 40 touchdowns and over 4,000 yards in your debut season. Stroud is on his way to another season like that and the only person who may be able to stop him is him.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Ji’Ayir Brown, Penn State, Safety, Senior.
Nobody had a better game in this huge win for Penn State down in SEC country. Brown had 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for a loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 quarterback hurry, and 1 interception. He did a little of everything as the Nittany Lions held the Tigers to 12 points in Auburn, Alabama today.
Honorable Mention:
Connor Bazelak, Indiana, Quarterback, Junior.
Bazelak went 33 of 55 for 364 yards and 2 touchdowns and is a huge reason the Indiana Hoosiers are 3-0 and off to a great start. A start that was needed to keep the Tom Allen Era going. The Hoosiers are a team that the rest of the Big Ten can take lightly only at their own peril.
Mohammed Ibrahim, Minnesota, Running Back, Senior.
Ibrahim had 23 carries for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns. All those touchdowns and over 170 of those yards came in the first half. If the Gophers and Ibrahim keep their current trajectory going, Ibrahim will not only be in the Silver Football race but the Heisman race as well.
Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State, Wide Receiver, Sophomore.
Egbuka had 7 catches for 116 yards and 2 total touchdowns in Ohio State’s 77-21 win over Toledo. Egbuka is emerging as a star on an offense already full of stars. With the wear and tear of the Big Ten East, the Buckeyes will need Egbuka to keep up this production.
Taulia Tagovailoa, Maryland, Quarterback, Junior.
Tagovailoa was 17 of 23 for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns and 13 carries for 51 yards in Maryland’s big win over a tough SMU squad. Up next for Tagovailoa and the Terps, the Wolverines in the Big House.
Blake Corum, TTUN, Running Back, Junior.
Corum had 12 carries for 71 yards and 5 touchdowns. I don’t care if you are playing UConn, five rushing touchdowns on the ground is impressive. Corum will get his biggest test to date against a revamped Maryland next.
Co-Special Teams Players of the Week:
A.J. Henning, TTUN, Wide Receiver, Junior. Henning had 4 catches for 37 yards but his biggest impact came on special teams when he returned 3 punts, 1 of them for 61 yards for a touchdown. He finished the game with 7 touches for 112 yards and a touchdown to be one of the Big Ten Special Teams Players of the Week.
Charles Campbell, Indiana, Kicker, Senior. Campbell was 4 for 4 from field goals including the game-winner in overtime for Indiana against a tough Western Kentucky team. With those field goals and his single extra point, Campbell scored 13 points for the Hoosiers as they start the 2022 season perfect with a 3-0 record. Campbell is a huge weapon for Indiana to have in the tight games that are bound to happen this fall in the Big Ten.
Silver Football Watch:
Author’s Note: The Silver Football is an award given to the Big Ten Player of the Year by the media in Chicago where the Big Ten is headquartered.
-
- C.J. Stroud, Ohio State, Quarterback, Junior.Stroud is 62 of 85 for 941 yards and 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. Even at only the end of the first quarter of the season, this is his award to lose.
- Mohammed Ibrahim, Minnesota, Running Back, Senior.
Ibrahim has 67 carries for 464 yards and 7 touchdowns. He is a huge reason the Gophers are 3-0 and in control of their own destiny as they enter Big Ten play. if he can stay healthy and consistent, Minnesota should have a good shot at a Big Ten Championship.
- Nicholas Singleton, Penn State, Running Back, Freshman.
Singleton has 30 carries for 334 yards and 4 touchdowns, leading the Nittany Lions to a win over Auburn in Jordan-Hare. Penn State has two big road wins over Auburn and Purdue and is poised to be playing their best as Big Ten play regularly begins.
- Emeka Egbuka, and Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State, Wide Receivers, Sophomores. Harrison has 18 catches for 342 yards and 5 touchdowns. Egbuka has 20 catches for 324 yards and 4 total touchdowns. These two are stepping in for Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson flawlessly.
- Blake Corum, TTUN, Running Back, Junior.
Corum has 34 carries for 235 yards and 7 touchdowns. As the Big Ten season unfolds and Corum is needed for more than just the first half of the game these numbers will go up, and so will Corum on this list.
