Big Ten Players of the Week – Week 13

    Big Ten

Next week folks will be the final edition of the season with the most valuable players of the Big Ten Championship Game, all-Big Ten teams, and position awards for a great year of Big Ten Football!

Author’s Note: These are not the official Big Ten Players of the Week, but my Big Ten Players of the Week as a writer for Gridiron Heroics.

    Players of the Week

    Offensive Player of the Week:

    J.J. McCarthy, Michigan, Quarterback, Sophomore.

The Big Ten Championship is officially SET! 🏆@BoilerFootball will take on @UMichFootball ‼️ pic.twitter.com/D6y3AT2jzI

    — FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) November 26, 2022

McCarthy outplayed his counter part C.J. Stroud by going 12 of 24 for 263 yards with three touchdowns. His passing kept the game close until the Wolverines’ rushing attack could run away with it.

    Defensive Player of the Week:

    Sydney Brown, Illinois, Safety, Senior.

    That's ✌️ for @Sydbrown___ today.@IlliniFootball up 34-0. 😎 pic.twitter.com/GPkgOvAjOh

    — Illinois on BTN (@IllinoisOnBTN) November 26, 2022

Sydney had more touchdowns than his running brother in the Land of Lincoln battle. Brown had six tackles, two interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. He recovered a fumble for a 53 yard touchdown and then an interception returned 39 yards for a touchdown.

Special Teams Player of the Week:

    Chad Ryland, Maryland, Kicker, Senior.

    — Maryland Football (@TerpsFootball) November 27, 2022

Ryland was three for three of his field goals and four for four of his extra point tries to get Maryland the win over Rutgers and to 7-5 on the season.

    Honorable Mention:

Trey Palmer, Nebraska, Wide Receiver, Junior.

    👀 Make that 17 unanswered points for @HuskerFBNation 🔥 pic.twitter.com/OT3VVjjRLG

    — FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) November 25, 2022

Palmer led the way for the Cornhuskers to upset and keep the Iowa Hawkeyes out of the Big Ten Championship Game. Boilermaker fans how him a coke. Palmer had nine catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns. On the year he had 71 catches for 1,043 and nine touchdowns.

Charlie Jones, Purdue, Wide Receiver, Senior.

They left Chuck Sizzle wide open, and the WR made them pay. 💥@BoilerFootball extends its lead to 24-10. pic.twitter.com/0Laj9GXwiS

    — Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) November 26, 2022

Jones led the way for the Boilermakers to get the Old Oaken Bucket back. He had four catches for 143 yards and a touchdown. On the year Jones has 93 catches 1,056 yards and 11 touchdowns. Jones will have to have another big game if the Boilermakers hope to upset Michigan next week.

Big Ten Player of the Year Watch:

    1. Chase Brown, Illinois, Running Back, Junior.

Chase couldn't let his brother have all the fun ❗🤣@chasebrown____ x @IlliniFootball pic.twitter.com/nm4eroZm02

    — Illinois on BTN (@IllinoisOnBTN) November 26, 2022

Brown is the leader right now but if Blake Corum can return from injury and do a lot against Purdue next week in Indianapolis then he can leap frog Brown. Brown is the leading rusher in the nation with 328 carries for 1,643 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has 355 touches for 1,883 total yards and 13 total touchdowns. Brown’s great season has fueled a surprise Illini to an 8-4 season and put folks on notice of the Bret Bielema era at Illinois.

    2. Blake Corum, Michigan, Running Back, Junior.

    — FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) November 26, 2022

He has 247 carries 1,463 yards and 19 total touchdowns and that’s with virtually missing this past game. If he’s at full steam in Indy he can hop over Chase Brown.

    3. Mohammed Ibrahim, Minnesota, Running Back, Senior.

    😍 pic.twitter.com/PLWNw2m1zB

    — Minnesota on BTN (@MinnesotaOnBTN) November 27, 2022

A players’ player who leaves it out on the field every week. Ibrahim had 304 carries this season for 1,594 yards and 19 touchdowns in only 11 games. Minnesota might not be bowl eligible without this mountain of a man for them to follow.

    4. Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State, Wide Receiver, Sophomore.

    He's HI❌@MarvHarrisonJr | #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/iYRNbWY0Ew

    — Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 26, 2022

The only Buckeye who played as well as he is capable of in this most recent debacle of Day’s. Harrison had seven catches for 120 yards and a touchdown and had 72 catches 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns this year. His fantastic play covered a lot of warts for Ohio State this season.

    5. C.J. Stroud, Ohio State, Quarterback, Junior.

    QB1 is HYPED. @CJ7STROUD | #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/t2NmlDEkoP

    — Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) November 26, 2022

Rightly or wrongly, C.J. Stroud will forever be remembered for coming up short in The Game. Like everything else about this game it was the same as last year or it was worse and stroud was no exception. He was 34 of 49 for 394 yards and two touchdowns last year and 31 of 48 for 349 yards and two touchdowns this year but also two interceptions. If this was his last game like many suspect, he won’t be remembered for the Rose Bowl or 80 career touchdown passes but for coming up short in the two biggest games of  his Buckeye career.

I write about college football, it's past, present, and future. I cover Ohio State, BYU, the Big Ten, national college awards, and the MAC. The Ohio State Buckeyes and the BYU Cougars are my ride and die teams and I admit my heart is swayed toward the Scarlet and Gray and Royal Blue. I love my state of Ohio.
