I can’t believe the week 8 power rankings are coming out already. Kind of sucks that we’re halfway through the season already. You wait all spring and all summer long and these 20 weeks go by so damn quick. But this Big 12 season has not disappointed. Like I’ve said in earlier blogs, this might be the best all around conference top to bottom in the country. With no further ado, here are the power rankings to date.
#1 Texas
Yes, thats right. The Longhorns are still number one in this weeks power rankings. I know TCU is undefeated and the Longhorns played a close game with Iowa state, but do you really think the Horned Frogs are gonna beat Texas? The Iowa State game was a classic letdown game after an emotional win the week before. Everyone knew it would be a close game, but good teams win those games and Texas is still king in this conference.
#2 TCU
The only undefeated team in the Big 12, with a very impressive comeback over Oklahoma State yesterday. I think the Horned Frogs are a very good team and I really like what coach Sonny Dykes is doing. They show a no-quit attitude and quarterback Max Duggan is a real gritty player. I just don’t see them beating Texas.
#3 Kansas State
We will see if this team belongs in this spot of the Power Rankings this week when they face off against TCU. Is Adrian Martinez the real deal? Can Deuce Vaughan have a big game against the Horned Frogs? Is Kansas the best team in Kansas? All these questions will be answered the next three games, but I kind of have a soft spot for the Wildcats. If they go 2-1 in the next 3 games they’re a legit contender.
#4 Oklahoma State
This may seem low in the power rankings for the Cowboys, but honestly they are the Wisconsin of The Big 12. Right there to capture greatness but they always fall a little short. Kind of like yesterday when they lost in overtime when they were winning the entire team. Good team, not a great team.
#5 Oklahoma
Johnny, how the hell do you move the Sooners from the bottom of the power rankings last week to the number 5 spot this week? The answer, Venables gave the old, “If you’re gonna quit, quit” speech and that fired the Sooners up. Their quarterback is back, and they’re poised to go on a run in The Big 12. No one is gonna wanna play Oklahoma in the second half of the year.
#6 Kansas
Listen, this was a cute little run for the Jayhawks this year. I do really believe Lance has this team turned around, but Oklahoma was Oklahoma yesterday and Kansas Kansas’d. They’ll make a good Bowl this year and end up with a good record, but they’re still Kansas.
#7 Texas Tech, West Virginia, Baylor
Johnny, why are there three teams in this power ranking spot? Because they’re all the same. They’re all gonna beat each other. West Virginia just beat Baylor. Baylor will beat Texas Tech and Texas Tech will beat West Virginia. It’s a circle, so they all belong here.
#8 Iowa State
I really hate to put Matt Campbell at the bottom fo the Power Rankings. This team just loses close games, though. You have to be able to win close games to be a real good team. They’ll beat one of the higher ranked teams in The Big 12, but they’re 1-4 in one -score games this year. That’s not a team that can close.
You know what? I really enjoy this Big 12 conference. There’s not many punk ass fans like there are in other conferences. (Cough: Will Levis is trash.) Been arguing on my Twitter with Michigan fans, Arkansas fans, Kentucky fans, and Utah fans. But ya’ll are pretty cool in The Big 12 and I think every team is a good team, but some teams are just better than others. Make sure to follow Spiked College Football show and my picks on Units Only Go Up and have yourselves a good little Sunday, ya’ll.
