Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has established himself as the premier wideout in the NFL, earning the top spot in ESPN’s 2025 rankings of wide receivers. Praised by league executives, coaches, and scouts, Chase’s dominance on the field has left defenses scrambling to contain him, with one rival executive bluntly stating that “Chase is a b— to cover.”
Coming off a career year in 2024, Chase accomplished the rare triple crown of receiving, leading the league in receptions (127), receiving yards (1,708), and touchdowns (17). His ability to separate from defenders and rack up yards after the catch has made him nearly unstoppable.

Chase’s 787 yards after the catch last season were 190 more than the next closest receiver, highlighting his explosive playmaking ability. NFL evaluators have credited Chase’s growth in recognizing defensive schemes and tailoring his routes to exploit coverages.
Despite his dominance, the Bengals believe he is still refining his craft, a terrifying prospect for opposing defenses. Chase himself has set the bar high for 2025, boldly predicting that an NFL receiver will break the 2,000-yard mark in the next three years, and he aims to be the one to do it.
Rival NFL Executive Gets Real About Cincinnati Bengals Star Ja’Marr Chase

An anonymous NFL executive got painfully real about Chase. This is detailed more in an analysis by Jeremy Fowler for ESPN.
Chase separated from defenders on the field all year, then separated from the pack in these rankings in Year 4. He earned around 70% of the first-place votes after producing the fifth triple crown of the Super Bowl era with league-highs in catches (127), receiving yards (1,708) and touchdowns (17), joining Cooper Kupp, Steve Smith Sr., Sterling Sharpe and Jerry Rice.
As one NFL personnel director put it, Jefferson is the better route runner, but Chase is the better overall playmaker. He’s the ultimate first-pick-in-the-pickup-game athlete alongside Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.
“Honestly, it comes down to Chase is a b— to cover,” a high-ranking NFL personnel executive said. “We are super aware of him and have played him a bunch and been torched by him a bunch.”
Rival players like Justin Jefferson and Tyreek Hill have also been in the conversation for the league’s best receiver, but Chase’s combination of power, speed, and route-running has set him apart. His performance has made him a nightmare matchup for defensive coordinators, and he continues to improve under the leadership of quarterback Joe Burrow.

Chase’s ranking as the NFL’s best receiver solidifies his place as an elite talent in the league. As the Bengals gear up for the 2025 season, all eyes will be on Chase to see if he can surpass his own lofty expectations and continue to torment defenses.
