No. 6 Penn State is set to host No. 11 SMU in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Saturday at Beaver Stadium in Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions will play the contest without a key member of the offense who had scored several touchdowns during the team’s 13 games.
The timing of the transfer overlapping with the college postseason has caused problems with bowl games. Marshall had to back out of their bowl matchup with Army because too many players transferred last week.
Beau Pribula is leaving Penn State
On Sunday, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg reported PSU backup quarterback Beau Pribula is entering the transfer portal and will not play in the CFP.
“Penn State backup quarterback Beau Pribula is set to enter the transfer portal and leave the team ahead of the College Football Playoff, citing an ‘overlapping CFB playoff and transfer portal timeline.’ Pribula, a redshirt sophomore from York, Pennsylvania, had been a key part of Penn State’s offense throughout the season while playing behind starter Drew Allar,” Rittenberg wrote. “He tied for second on the team in rushing touchdowns with six and was third in both carries (38) and rushing yards (242), giving first-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki a unique change-up quarterback.
Pribula, a former four-star recruit out of York, Pennsylvania, went 26-of-35 passing for 275 yards, five touchdowns and one interception in 2024.
Pribula’s decision appears to indicate junior quarterback Drew Allar will return to PSU in 2025.
College football fans react to the timing of Pribula’s decision
Fans on social media reacted to Pribula’s decision, with many thinking it would hurt the Nittany Lions in the CFP.
“Yep. Penn state is cooked. He could have waited and then marketed himself as a national champ,” wrote a fan.
“Penn State might be cooked,” wrote another.
