Tremaine Edmunds has entered his second year with the Chicago Bears as one of the most polarizing figures on their roster. Despite his impressive physical attributes and high-profile contract, his performance has left fans and analysts questioning his long-term impact.
NFL evaluators acknowledge Edmunds’ undeniable athleticism, noting his rare combination of size, speed, and versatility. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 250 pounds, he possesses the tools to excel as a modern linebacker. However, his on-field production has been inconsistent, with critics pointing to a lack of instinctive play despite his intelligence and effort.

An NFL coordinator offered a blunt assessment, stating that Edmunds is “smart, but not as instinctive as you’d hope.” This critique reflects concerns about his ability to react quickly to evolving situations, a skill that separates good linebackers from great ones. His three tackles for loss in 2024 underscored this gap, despite logging eight pass deflections.
Adjusting to a new system in Chicago has presented challenges for Edmunds. Transitioning from the Buffalo Bills’ defensive scheme to the Bears’ has required an adaptation period, which has been evident in his cautious approach. This hesitance has prevented him from fully utilizing his physical gifts to dominate on the field.
Chicago Bears Tremaine Edmunds Receive Blunt Review From NFL Coordinator

Just recently, an anonymous NFL coordinator got real with Edmunds. This can be seen in an analysis by Jeremy Fowler for ESPN.
But production has been an issue for Edmunds, who hasn’t made a Pro Bowl since 2020 and whose three tackles for loss last season marked a career low, though his eight pass deflections were his most since 2019.
“Smart, but not as instinctive as you’d hope,” an NFL coordinator said. “If you put his ability with [teammate T.J. Edwards’] instincts, you’d have an All-Pro.”
Supporters argue that Edmunds needs more time to develop chemistry with his teammates and fully grasp the nuances of the Bears’ defense. Coaches remain optimistic, highlighting his potential to evolve into a cornerstone player if he can refine his instincts and assertiveness.

As the Bears look to rebound from a difficult season, Edmunds’ ability to bridge the gap between potential and performance will be critical. His journey forward will determine whether he can become the defensive leader Chicago envisioned when they signed him.
