It looks like the Bears may have missed again on a high round tackle. Teven Jenkins career has not gotten off to a very good start. Something Bears fans are all to familiar with. At least this one isn’t on current Gm Ryan Poles. No chalk another one up to Ryan Pace, we will be paying the price of his mistakes for awhile.

It starts with an injury
The first sign of trouble came when it was reported Jenkins would miss a good portion of the 2021 season before he ever stepped on the field as a Bear. Jenkins was evaluated as a first round talent but fell to the Bears in the second round do to a back injury he suffered while playing at Oklahoma State. Chris Williams came to mind immediately when I first heard this report. Williams was a first round pick of the Bears in 08 out of Vanderbilt. He would have a couple back injuries in training camp before ever playing a snap. When he did finally play for the Bears he was terrible.

Drafting bad tackles since 91
Since 1991 drafting offensive tackles in the first and second round has been an absolute nightmare for the Bears. None have worked out for the Bears. Here’s a list of the picks.
- 1991 Stan Thomas first rd Texas
- 1992 Troy Auzenne second rd California
- 1994 Marcus Spears second rd North Western State
- 2002 Marc Colombo first rd Boston College
- 2008 Chris Williams first rd Vanderbilt
- 2011 Gabe Carimi first rd Wisconsin
The Bears had finally stopped drafting tackles that high until Jenkins.

What we know about Jenkins
It was reported Jenkins was having issues with his back in off season work outs last year, the Bears said it was separate from his college injury. Then Last August Jenkins would end up having Surgery keeping him sideline until late in the season where he would return as a back up. After the Bears fired Nagy and Pace it was assumed the new general manager would make him the starting right tackle. However when practices started Jenkins was listed second on the depth chart. We weren’t really sure why until we saw him in action.

Jenkins had been getting whipped in practices by rookies taken late in the draft and hasn’t looked good. Poles made a statement right after this years draft, saying no one on the offensive lines job is safe. Late round rookies can absolutely win jobs. It felt like that statement was pointed towards Jenkins.
How will this set the team back?
It’s to early to tell but there are a few factors. Keep in mind not only was Jenkins taken in the second round but the Bears traded away a third round pick to move up and get him. The Bears took Braxton Jones in the 5th round this year. He’s currently a starter at tackle on the depth chart. If he plays well enough to be at least average then Jenkins struggles aren’t the end of the world. Especially if Jenkins can salvage his career and play solid at the guard position for the Bears. Only time will tell, but it sure looks like the Bears may have missed on another high round tackle.
