Bears fans celebrate as Ted Phillips announces plans to retire. Bon voyage Teddy, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. In 1983 the Bears had an incredible draft. They selected building blocks for the superbowl team. Covert, Dent, Richardson, Thayer, Duerson, Gault and Bortz. That’s an amazing haul in one draft. Unfortunately that same year they hired a weasel by the name of Ted Phillips, who along with the McCaskey’s would run the Bears franchise into the ground. Not Virginia she’s an absolute doll. Her son’s and their buddy Phillips however? Absolute football morons.
Bears hire Terrible Ted Phillips
Phillips was hired in 83 as Bears team controller. Basically over seeing all the teams money operations. That’s where he should have stayed. We all know that kid from highschool that got the job at Burger King, and worked there for years until he finally made general manager. That’s basically what Phillips did with the Bears. He would climb the ranks while being under qualified for everything he was given. Phillips is a business man that cares about money. Bottom line. I don’t care how many end of the season press conferences he says “things need to change”. They don’t for him and the McCaskey’s because their pockets are overflowing. They take advantage of a town that will pack soldier field for an 0-16 team if it came to that.
Phillips rise through the ranks
After 4 years of being the teams controller, Phillips was promoted to director of finance. Working with the teams money where he belonged. While working with the Bears he would earn a master’s in management and marketing from Kellogg graduate school. Again showing zero knowledge of the actual game of football. In 93 he became vice president of operations. Finally in 1999 the franchise hit a new low, hiring him as team president/CEO.
Bears under Phillips
His first hire was his best when he brought in Jerry Angelo as General manager. Angelo was ok but not great, the best of a bad bunch. With Phillips at the helm the Bears became a clown car of revolving General Managers and coaches. Guy’s like Phil Emery, Marc Trestman, Ryan pace, Matt Nagy. Who can forget the Dave McGinnis blunder? Granted Phillips was only V.P at the time but he had his hand in the cookie jar on that one. People can say some of these things weren’t directly his fault. You’re wrong. When you’re CEO everything is your fault. Finally after the Ryan Pace Matt Nagy embarrassment the Bears relinquished some Phillips power. This hurt Ted’s feelings and now he’s retiring. Phillips was Bears president for twenty three seasons. In that time the Bears had a record of 169 wins and 184 losses, making the playoffs just six times and a one time Superbowl runner up.
The Bears future president
Here’s the problem. Assuming one of the blundering idiot McCaskey’s doesn’t assume this position, do we trust them to hire the right guy? In recent years they have asked for the help of Bill Polian in office personal situations. Could he be the next Bears president? If not they will certainly consult him about it. Don’t be fooled Bears fans, this is a huge decision the team will have to make, and we’re in bad hands. The winds of change certainly feel apon us however wth coach Eberflus and General manager Ryan Poles. Maybe they can keep the momentum going. 🐻⬇️
