The Wisconsin Badgers have been working swiftly in the 2025 recruiting class, attempting to pick up a newly available recruit.
Carter Smith, a four-star quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class, committed to the Michigan Wolverines in back in 2023. The quarterback just recently decided to reopen his recruitment, and end his commitment with the wolverines. Shortly after doing so, the Wisconsin Badgers locked Smith in for an upcoming official visit during the Oregon Ducks game on November 16th.
The 5-3 Wisconsin Badgers are coming off of a difficult loss against the Penn State Nittany Lions that felt like it could have been a win at times. Despite some troubles on the field this season, the Badgers have worked hard to recruit the 2025 and 2026 classes. With the quarterback room potentially feeling too light at the moment, the Badgers are looking to secure another commitment to bolster the talent in the room.

Wisconsin quickly offered a scholarship and made a big push for the quarterback after his recruitment was reopened. The Badgers are currently the only team to book a future visit with the quarterback as well, establishing the team as likely leaders. Offensive coordinator Phil Longo has been the primary point of contact between the Badgers and Smith.
I feel like @BarstoolBigCat should be in town for this one.

At the moment, the Wisconsin Badgers have one other quarterback committed in the 2025 class named Landyn Locke. The quarterback is the younger brother of the current starter for the Badgers, Braedyn Locke, but has had an unfortunate season. Locke suffered a season-ending injury early on and will have not played football for over a year when he arrives on campus.
What Could Carter Smith Provide the Wisconsin Badgers Offense?
With Smith seemingly singling out the Wisconsin Badgers program currently, it could be valuable to look at what the quarterback would provide the team.
Smith is a true dual-threat quarterback, with an exceptional ability to run the football as well as a prolific passing ability. The quarterback might not jump off of the tape for the right reasons initially, with a rather odd release point in his throws, but has quite the effective arm. Smith is not the most technical player between his release point and off-balance delivery but much of that partially due to his baseball background.
When watching Smith, the quarterback looks like a shortstop on the football field between his delivery of the football and the power he places behind each throw. The only real knock on the arm of Smith has been his accuracy, with the ball often going wide when he does miss.
On the ground, however, Smith is a practically flawless rusher and quite the energized rusher as well. Smith is not like typical quarterbacks as the 6-foot-3-inch, 190-pound quarterback will initiate contact often. The quarterback is particularly dangerous in the red-zone, with the majority of his rushing touchdowns coming inside that area of the field.
Between the Wisconsin Badgers interception issue with Braedyn Locke, and the question marks surround the Landyn Locke injury, Smith could possibly become a starter. If the quarterback were to have the chance to compete for the starting role, Smith would arguably have the upper hand schematically. The biggest competition would be Mabrey Mettauer, a current freshman on the team who is serving as the backup.
