On Friday, the Baltimore Ravens fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 16-13 in their preseason opener. Baltimore rested most of their main contributors, including two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson. Baltimore ran most of their backups, a common practice in today’s NFL sans the Kansas City Chiefs. However, despite roster cuts looming with the NFL regular season fast approaching, the Ravens signed a pair of players Sunday.

According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Ravens have signed punter Jack Browning and wide receiver Anthony Miller. In a corresponding move, Baltimore has parted ways with long snapper Randen Plattner and guard Tykeem Doss. NFL teams can hold 90 players through the preseason, although most clubs start to trim down their rosters after their first exhibition contest.

Just two days after their preseason loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the Baltimore Ravens have shuffled the backend of their roster. Per sources, Baltimore will waive guard Tykeem Doss and long snapper Randen Plattner. Doss, an undrafted free agent in 2023, held a reserve futures contract with Baltimore entering the preseason. Doss sat on the Ravens’ practice squad for most of last year. Meanwhile, Plattner, a rookie, played the past five seasons with the Kansas State Wildcats. Long-snapper Nick Moore, a 2022 second-team All-Pro, remains with the Ravens for a fifth consecutive year.

The Baltimore Ravens will replace Doss and Plattner with wide receiver Anthony Miller and punter Jack Browning. The 51st pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Miller will attempt to make his first active roster since 2021. Miller spent his first three seasons with the Chicago Bears, catching 134 passes for 1,564 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Bears traded Miller to the Houston Texans the following offseason, where he played only two games before his release. As for Browning, he is in his second professional season after playing collegiately with San Diego State.

Entering the second game of last year’s preseason, the Baltimore Ravens were riding a 24-game exhibition winning streak. However, with Thursday’s loss, the Ravens have dropped three consecutive preseason games. Nevertheless, the Raven played a preseason contest without highly-touted backup quarterback Tyler Huntley for the first time in four years. Instead, Baltimore turned to the passing duo of veteran Josh Johnson and rookie Devin Leary. Neither quarterback shined, with Johnson struggling with efficiency and Leary failing to push the ball downfield.

In the loss, rookie running back Owen Wright scampered for 33 yards on seven carries. Wright will attempt to carve out a role as the team’s third-string rusher behind Justice Hill and Derrick Henry. Meanwhile, fellow running back Keaton Mitchell is still returning from a season-ending leg injury.
