The Baltimore Ravens are in a rough spot right now. Their MVP-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson has officially requested a trade and looks to be on his way out of Baltimore. However, John Harbaugh spoke at the coaches meeting in Arizona and said that Jackson is still their quarterback. While this is what he is saying publically, privately the Ravens may have been looking at alternatives. According to one report, they tried to sign former number-one overall pick Baker Mayfield.
Baltimore Ravens Tried To Sign Baker Mayfield
The rumors of Mayfield to the Ravens first surfaced when the team hired Todd Monken as their new offensive coordinator. Monken was Mayfield’s offensive coordinator during the 2019 season. The JoeBucsFan website has reported that “Baker Mayfield got an offer in free agency from the Ravens but declined.” He decided to ultimately sign with Tampa Bay. It seems to be centered around the idea that Mayfield was looking for a starting job and Tampa Bay had a much better chance of making that happen.
What Will The Ravens Do At Quarterback?
While the Ravens are still hopeful that Jackson can return, it doesn’t seem likely. The bridge seems to have been burned. Baltimore trying to sign Baker Mayfield signals that they are not planning on Jackson being back. Tyler Huntley is on the roster and could very well be the starter come week 1. The team could look at potential free agents but that is scraping the bottom of the barrel. It’s hard to imagine the team competing with Teddy Bridgewater or Matt Ryan as their quarterback.
The Ravens are in a tough spot. Mayfield turned them down and they might find themselves scrambling to fill their quarterback room. The Lamar Jackson saga continues and it will be interesting to see exactly how it gets resolved.
