Yesterday I went over three offensive players primed for a breakout season. The Packers have a lot of fresh new talent, and today, it’s the defense’s turn. The Packer defense has had quite the journey over the last three years. In 2019, Green Bay was 14th in total passing yards allowed, 23rd in total rushing. 2020 was an improvement for the team, finishing 7th in passing defense, 14th in rushing defense. 2021 showed another improvement, as they nearly cracked the top 10 in rushing and passing defense. A new season means new opportunities. Some teams change more than others in the offseason, but change comes for everyone nonetheless. Through the draft, free agency, retirement, trades, etc., no team is exactly the same one year to the next. The Packers are no different. On offense, there were some significant changes. There’s the blockbuster move – Davante Adams was traded to the Raiders. And then there’s smaller moves: Signing Sammy Watkins while selecting a receiver in the second round of the draft. It’s safe to say that NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes has been the lone bright spot in the Texas Tech quarterback room in the past several years. In his final season at Tech, Mahomes threw for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns. Since 2018, no quarterback room has netted more than a combined 25 touchdown passes in a season. Not great. The 2022 season brings new possibilities, but also new challenges.
