The Penn State Nittany Lions will play their first game of the 2022 season on Thursday, September 1, 2022, in a Big Ten matchup against the Purdue Boilermakers. As the season quickly approaches, the Nittany Lions made a very important announcement this weekend: Team Captains.  Penn State head coach James Franklin and his coaching staff chose six captains for the 2022 season. The Nittany Lions added a former NFL quarterback to their coaching staff this week: Charlie Frye.  He will now serve as the offensive analyst and analytics coordinator.  He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 2005 NFL Draft in the third round and would go on to play for the Seahawks and Raiders. Due to injuries, Frye’s NFL career lasted just five years. Penn State football returned to campus this week as preseason camp began on Monday. One of the players who participated in practice was none other than defensive tackle PJ Mustipher. It is reported that Mustipher took part in at least individual drills during the first day of training camp. Members of the media weren’t permitted to watch all of the camp drills, so it’s unknown whether he did any contact work. The fifth-year senior injured his left knee last October against Iowa, ending his season. Mustipher underwent surgery to repair the injured knee and was cleared recently to return to…

Penn State Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin spoke to reporters on Wednesday morning as Big Ten media days opened.  Franklin had some good news for fans. Franklin told the media that senior defensive tackle PJ Mustipher has cleared physicals and conditioning tests and expected to start Week 1. “We expect him ready by Game 1,” Franklin said. Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List for the upcoming 2022 season. The Maxwell Award honors the best college football player of the season, decided by college coaches, sportscasters and sportswriters.  Clifford, who just turned twenty-four last week, is entering his sixth and final season at Penn State. Clifford has been the starting quarterback since 2019 after his predecessor Trace McSorley graduated and left for the NFL.  In 2021, due to a weak offensive line and injuries, Clifford struggled to find his footing. Penn State has added some of the highest touted prospects through verbal commitments for the 2023 class this offseason. On Monday, four-star running back London Montgomery became the latest Pennsylvania high school running back to commit to the Nittany Lions. With his verbal commitment, Montgomery now becomes the sixth Pennsylvania running back that head coach James Franklin has recruited.
