Auburn football is having a tough 2024 season. Despite a hard-fought 24-10 win on the road against the Kentucky Wildcats last Saturday, the SEC squad is 3-5, pacing their fifth straight season failing to eclipse six wins. Since the turn of the 21st century, Auburn has posted just three double-digit winning seasons, two coming during the Tommy Tuberville era in the early 2000s. Although retired from coaching college football since 2016, the now United States Senator does not shy away from talking about the game via his social media accounts.
On Monday, following a Madden video game stream from Vice President candidate Tim Walz and United States politician and activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Tuberville took aim at the former for a likely slip-up while using football terms. Following the stream, Walz, a Democrat, reposted the video via Twitter, captioned, “@AOC can run a mean pick 6,” with Tuberville, a Republican, clowning him for his usage of football terms.

On his social media account on Monday, Tuberville agreed with Trump War Room on Twitter, which corrected Democratic VP candidate Tim Walz for using the term “pick 6” incorrectly in a post. Walz took social media by storm on Monday morning for playing the NFL video game Madden alongside fellow political Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. However, Tuberville and those alongside the Republican party line quickly went after Walz for saying he “ran a pick 6,” resulting from a play and not an actual play call.
Despite the wrong usage of the term, Walz is familiar with football. He coached football at Alliance High School in Nebraska and Mankato West High School in Minnesota. Most notably, he served as the defensive coordinator at Mankato West from 1996 to 2006. Meanwhile, during that same span, Tommy Tuberville coached for the North Carolina Tar Heels until taking the Auburn football head job in 1999. He went 85-40 with the Auburn Tigers, headlined by a perfect 13-0 season in 2004.
