It’s been five seasons since Auburn football finished ranked in the AP Poll Top 25. A storied program with 122 seasons, three Heisman Trophy winners, and two national titles, the Auburn Tigers are amid unprecedented times, failing to eclipse six wins since 2020. On Saturday, the Tigers again took a massive step backward in the hopes of a rebuild, falling to the California Golden Bears at home 21-14. In the loss, quarterback Payton Thorne struggled mightily, going 14-of-27 for 165 yards, one touchdown, and four picks.
Thorne had issues with consistency and turnovers, and with Auburn losing by just a touchdown, many blamed him. In an interview on The Next Round on YouTube, Thorne revealed that sports betting fans who lost money on Auburn football last weekend have asked for cash back through Venmo.

Thorne did not play well on Saturday, barely completing 50% of his passes while tossing a career-worse four interceptions. Before last weekend’s tilt, Thorne had never thrown three interceptions in a game, let alone four. According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, as a member of the Auburn football team, Thorne has failed to eclipse 165 passing yards in 11 of his 13 starts against FBS opponents. In those games, Thorne has tossed 15 touchdowns against 13 picks.
Auburn lost last Saturday’s home matchup to Cal as a 10.5-point favorite. After two weeks, Thorne has tallied 487 passing yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions. He has also rushed 19 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Auburn will host the New Mexico Lobos this upcoming Saturday.
