The Auburn football program is officially at DEFCON 1 following another brutal home loss in the final minutes of regulation. After a failed comeback attempt against the Arkansas Razorbacks the week prior, the Auburn Tigers nursed an 11-point lead late against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday. However, with Oklahoma down their top five receivers and starting a true freshman quarterback for the first time this season, OU rattled off 17 points in the final 8:32, escaping Auburn, Alabama, with a 27-21 victory.
The Tigers most recent loss brings them to 8-10 in the Hugh Freeze era. More importantly, Auburn football, a program with eight SEC titles and two national championships, moved to 25-29 since the 2020 campaign. Naturally, Auburn fans are at wit’s end with the current state of the 122-year-old program, blasting Freeze and company postgame.
Loss to OU Leaves Auburn Football Fans Furious
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3:
Oklahoma storms back late and beats Auburn 27-21 The Sooners move to 4-1 on the season.
After allowing a touchdown on Oklahoma’s first drive of the game, the Auburn football team, led by once-banished starting quarterback Payton Thorne, scored two second-quarter touchdowns, heading into the half with a seven-point advantage. Following a lackluster third quarter in which the only scoring came from an OU field goal, Thorne connected with tight end Luke Deal for a one-yard touchdown pass. However, the wheels quickly fell off for the Tigers. In the final ten minutes of regulation, Auburn threw a pick-six, missed a field goal, and went 0-for-2 on fourth down. Conversely, Oklahoma scored 17 points on four drives.
In the game’s final play, Thorne heaved a pass toward the endzone for a potential walk-off 56-yard Hail Mary but fell 13 yards short. Auburn football’s struggle extends well past the Bryan Harsin era, with the SEC club owning a 2-3 record after Saturday’s loss. Auburn Faifthul did not mince words when putting the program on blast in the wake of the defeat:
I am an AU alum and am encouraging my son to apply to Bama and Clemson. I remind him that it is really difficult to be an Auburn fan. We choke in the big 3 – football, basketball, and baseball. Thank god for our equestrian team!!

Absolutely pathetic! Why is Thorne still even in the state of Alabama? Coaching staff too

Auburn hired Hugh Freeze and can’t fire him because they’re still paying two other coaches

100% of the blame should be on Hugh Freeze.
— Babysitter Bari (@BabysitterBari) September 28, 2024
Auburn should be 5-0 and the fact that they aren’t is due to Hugh Freeze, nobody else.

Hugh Freeze is a bad hire, who replaced a bad hire, who replaced a coach who should have never been fired.

I mean, I don't know what to say here. Auburn was in complete control into the 4th quarter, and then it all collapsed. The pick six was the dagger. Terrible play calling, Terrible coaching, Terrible players, and Auburn will be creamed by Georgia next Saturday. #WarEagle pic.twitter.com/G5aZNxn8PL
