Former Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville undoubtedly cultivated a relationship with the media during his long tenure as a college sports leader. Tuberville spent 21 years as a head coach, leading the Auburn Tigers, Cincinnati Bearcats, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Ole Miss Rebels from 1995 to 2016. The 69-year-old held high-profile jobs during the rise of ESPN’s flagship show “College GameDay,” likely having his fair share of run-ins with co-host Kirk Herbstreit. Nevertheless, Tuberville applauded Herbstreit on Tuesday via social media after the latter took a stance on the current controversy surrounding women’s sports.
When pressed about biological men belonging in women’s sports, Herbstreit said, “Of course not. Ridiculous question.” Tuberville quickly congratulated Herbstreit for making his stance public on the popular social media platform Twitter.
Ex-Auburn Football Frontman Tommy Tuberville: Stands Up For Kirk Herbstreit
Last week, the topic of men competing in women’s sports became mainstream news after Imane Khelif of Algeria won via knockout in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Multiple media platforms and popular talking heads went after the International Olympic Committee for allowing Khelif to compete while calling her “transgender” and a “man.” Although Khelif has failed gender eligibility tests in recent events, she has long competed as a biological woman in women’s boxing. She owns a 9-5 professional record. The underlying issue with Khelif’s eligibility has now shifted towards her genotype. Although presented with a clarification, men competing in women’s sports remains a hot topic, with Herbstreit vocalizing his opinion on Tuesday.
Well said @KirkHerbstreit.
Everyone – parents, teachers, educators, coaches, announcers, etc. – should be UNITED on this.

Former Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville showered Herbstreit with support, saying, “Everyone – parents, teachers, educators, coaches, announcers, etc. – should be UNITED on this. Men don’t belong in women’s sports.” Tuberville has been at the forefront of combating Title IX changes under the Biden administration. However, many fans have critiqued Heirbstreit and Tuberville for using the Imane Khelif controversy as a lead to talking about men participating in women-centric sports after rumors of her being a woman were debunked. More notably, the question of safety in women’s boxing has become more pressing.
Auburn Football: Performance Under Tommy Tuberville
Tommy Tuberville’s 21-year coaching career peaked during his decade run with Auburn football. Despite reiterating his desire to stay with the Ole Miss Rebels, Tuberville left for the Auburn Tigers in 1999. After a subpar 5-6 inaugural campaign, Auburn nearly doubled their win total the following season, including a trip to the Citrus Bowl. After three more winning seasons, The Tuberville-led Auburn football program went 13-0 in 2004, winning the Sugar Bowl to conclude an undefeated season. Tuberville and Auburn posted a 29-9 record from 2005 to 2007, highlighted by a Cotton Bowl victory.
However, Auburn fell to a 5-7 record in 2008, their worst in the Tommy Tuberville era. The frontman resigned following the season, taking a one-year hiatus from coaching football. Tuberville inked the head coaching job with the Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2010, where he spent three seasons. After a largely unsuccessful run, Tuberville landed with the Cincinnati Bearcats from 2013 to 2016. Tuberville eventually shifted to politics, becoming the Senator of Alabama in 2020.
