For the fourth straight season, the Auburn football program has lost exactly seven games. Last weekend, while fighting for their bowl eligibility lives against the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Auburn Tigers offense sputtered, losing 28-14 on the road in Tuscaloosa. Like many of the teams that are fresh off a disappointing campaign, Auburn has already suffered a transfer portal loss before the end of the weekend.
On Sunday, Auburn quarterback Holden Geriner entered the transfer portal after three years with the program. A four-star prospect in the class of 2022, Geriner never carved out a role with Auburn football, even with the program playing musical chairs at quarterback this season. Yet, Auburn fans still felt the loss of Geriner on Sunday, flooding social media after his departure.
Auburn Football Fans React to Loss of Quarterback
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3:
Breaking: Auburn QB Holden Geriner plans to enter the Transfer Portal, he tells @on3sports.
The 6’3 205 QB will have 2 years of eligibility remaining.
He was ranked as a Top 15 QB in the ’22 Class (per On3).
A top quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class, Holden Geriner, will transfer from Auburn football after three years with the program. Part of Bryan Harsin’s final recruiting class, Geriner tossed just three passes as a true freshman. In 2023, Geriner got a somewhat extended look against Maryland and Texas A&M but finished the season 5-of-15 for 75 yards and an interception. This season, he again played behind starting signal-caller Payton Thorne, throwing only two passes in two games. With Thorne struggling earlier in the season, Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze turned to redshirt freshman Hank Brown over Geriner.
Geriner will enter the transfer portal with Payton Thorne, a fifth-year senior who is likely done with Auburn football. Meanwhile, Brown will return, with 2024 elite QB recruit Walker White likely to get an extended look this offseason. Per 247Sports, he was the fifth-ranked quarterback in last year’s class, trailing only DJ Lagway, Julian Sayin, Luke Kromenhoek, and Dylan Raiola. Still, Auburn fans felt the loss of Griener on Sunday:

If Holden was our starting QB next season there is a 98.2% chance Hugh Freeze would not make it to 2026…
— Georgia Deplorable (@budhuey) December 1, 2024
Someone who was coached by both Harsin and Freeze decided to play somewhere else. I guess the locker room rumors are true.
