It’s been four years since the Auburn football program posted at least seven wins in a season, a far cry from their glory days in the mid-2000s and early 2010s. However, with Auburn set to enter year two of the promising Hugh Freeze era next fall, backed by a stellar recruiting class and a bevy of high-end transfers, there’s hope and optimism for the future. However, the duo of former head coach turned Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville and 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton have also gained a remarkable amount of attention this offseason.
A month after Tuberville caught flack for an old recruiting horror story during his Auburn football days, Newton is now making his rounds on social media for his vocal support of arguably the most criticized quarterback in the NFL. On Friday, on his podcast 4th & 1, Newton went to bat for Dallas Cowboys franchise quarterback Dak Prescott, with the latter entering the final season of his four-year, $160 million contract. Newton last played in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers in 2021, struggling with efficiency while the NFC South club limped to a 5-12 record.
Former Auburn Football QB: Shows Support for Dallas Cowboys QB Dake Prescott

Longtime NFL quarterback and Auburn football standout Cam Newton did not mince words when sharing his thoughts about Dallas Cowboys franchise passer Dak Prescott. On his popular podcast 4th & 1, Newton showed his respect for Prescott after a graphic revealed that his numbers (last 50 starts) are eerily similar to three-time Super Bowl champion and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“If you got the same stat line as Patrick Mahomes, something is clicking,” said Newton regarding the statistical similarities between Prescott and Mahomes across their past 50 starts. Prescott and Mahomes have the same amount of passing touchdowns across their past 50 starts. However, Prescott has one less pick while owning a slightly better passer rating.
Meanwhile, Newton compared Prescott to the league’s ten highest-paid quarterbacks, suggesting that his upcoming payday should surpass many of his peers. “So if you’re going to sit up here and judge Dak Prescott on playoff success, I’m looking at a list of guys that don’t even have playoff experience or a playoff win.” Newton continued, saying, “I would prefer Dak Prescott over Kirk Cousins. I would prefer Dak over Kyler Murray. I would prefer Dak over Jalen Hurts. Justin Herbert? Dak. Trevor Lawrence? I’m taking Dak.”
Cam Newton and Dak Prescott: A Quarterback Showdown

Newton started his college career with the Florida Gators but eventually found his footing with the Auburn football program in 2010. Newton spent one year with the Tigers, throwing 2,854 yards, 30 touchdowns, and seven picks while leading the SEC club to an undefeated season. Newton also dominated on the ground, rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 scores en route to winning the Heisman Trophy Award and leading Auburn to their first title since 1957. The dual-threat Newton went first in the subsequent draft, winning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year for a 35-touchdown effort. Although short, Newton had an electric prime, headlined by an MVP season and a trip to the Super Bowl in 2013.
Meanwhile, like Newton, Prescott flashed his dual-threat ability during his four seasons with the Mississippi State Bulldogs from 2012 to 2015. Prescott rushed for a healthy 41 touchdowns while adding nearly 10,000 yards passing. However, despite his massive college success, Prescott had to wait until the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft before being selected by the Dallas Cowboys. Again, like Newton, Prescott won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year during his inaugural season. Prescott earned MVP votes last season but fell short of Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.
