The College Football Playoff is set, but the FBS had one regular season game on its schedule for Saturday. The Week 16 contest took place on the same day as the start of the bowl season, with South Alabama knocking off Western Michigan 30-23 in the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl.
Earlier on Saturday, the Navy Midshipmen took on the No. 22 Army Black Knights at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. The Army-Navy game featured two teams that were ranked in the Top 25 and were part of the early CFP conversation before suffering blowout losses to Notre Dame.
Army football and Navy football had good seasons
Then-No. 24 Navy lost their first game of the season to the Irish in a 51-14 bloodbath at MetLife Stadium on Oct. 26. Then-No. 19 Army suffered their first defeat at the hands of Notre Dame, also in New York, in a 49-14 stinker at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 23.
Army would go on to win the AAC Championship against Tulane on Dec. 6. The CFP selection committee would give the Black Knights a final No. 22 ranking before their final game of the year against Navy.
A college football upset happened on Saturday
Navy didn’t care that Army had a ranking or that the Black Knights were 6.5-point favorites to win on Saturday. They outgained Army 378-178 en route to a 31-13 victory in front of a crowd of 60,726. Navy scored their first touchdown of the day on a one-yard touchdown run by Blake Horvath on their opening drive and did not look back, leading for the rest of the game.
Navy outgained Army on the ground 271-113. Horvath rushed 25 times for 204 yards and two touchdowns. The Midshipmen won their first game in the rivalry since 2021. Navy leads the series 63-55-7.
Army (11-2) is set to play Louisiana Tech in the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl on Dec. 28. Navy (9-3) will face Oklahoma in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 27.
