The 14th of December will mark the 125th edition of an iconic rivalry, one of the biggest rivalries in college athletics: the Army-Navy football game. The deep-rooted history and meaning behind this game are what separate it from other rivalries. These players aren’t only playing to win the contest; they play to represent and honor their respective military branches. Members of both branches, either active or retired, have this game circled on their calendars. It is much more than just a game to them.
The Navy Midshipmen lead the all-time series with a record of 62-55-7. The first match of the series dates back to 1890. The Army Black Knights plan to beat the Midshipmen for the third year in a row and take home the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy. Army is coming into the game undefeated and ranked 19th in the latest college football playoff rankings. Navy has been struggling recently, losing 3 of their last 4 games. The threads that both teams will sport on gameday are unique; these uniforms were created in honor of a specific division and squadron for the branches.
Army’s 101st Airborne Division
The Black Knight’s sleek black uniforms pay homage to the 101st Airborne Division, a fighting force of the Screaming Eagles. The white specks that you see on the uniform represent the snow-covered pine forests they traveled through. The 101st Airborne patch and World War II era flag are a few of the many features of this jersey that have significance.

Navy’s Jolly Rogers
The jerseys that Navy created are representative of the iconic Jolly Rogers aircraft. There are significant details throughout the jersey, a few of which can be found in the helmet design and on the sleeves. The helmet is designed to resemble the infamous VF-84 aviator helmets that the squadron wears. On the sleeves of the jersey, you can see the traditional Jolly Rogers angled stripe that appears on the aircraft.

“America’s Game”
With the Navy having its first record above .500 in the last 5 years and Army coming in with no losses, this game should prove to be entertaining. The past 3 meetings have all been decided by 6 points or less; these games are historically known to be competitive. Military personnel and football fans in general are ready to witness another page in the book of this storied rivalry.
