The quarterback position is the most important position on the gridiron. The Arlington Renegades quarterback situation experienced some changes this week. Arlington released Kyle Sloter on Monday. Sloter was released after the Arlington Renegades lost 15-9 to the San Antonio Brahmas.
The Arlington Renegades quickly replaced Kyle Sloter with Vegas Vipers quarterback Luis Perez. Arlington traded for Perez and sent linebacker Ryan Mueller to the Vipers.
Arlington hasn’t received good play from its quarterbacks. Kyle Sloter completed 60 percent of his passes and passed for 499 yards. Sloter threw one touchdown and four interceptions. Sloter was inconsistent and struggled to connect with Arlington’s receivers. There were multiple games where Sloter had miscommunication with Arlington’s receivers. Sloter was visibly frustrated by play calls.
The Renegade’s offense has been sloppy. The Renegades are averaging 13 points per game. That is one touchdown and two field goals each game. Additionally, the offense averages 215.2 yards per game. Both statistics rank second to last in the XFL.
What about Luis Perez?
Perez has passed for 901 yards, thrown eight touchdowns, and five interceptions. Perez had success in the USFL with the New Jersey Generals. Last spring, Perez passed for 1,200 yards, threw nine touchdowns and one interception. Before playing for the Generals, Perez played for the TSL Jousters, New York Guardians, Los Angeles Wildcats, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Birmingham Iron, and Los Angeles Rams. Perez was a practice squad member in the NFL and didn’t start a game.
Perez was fantastic in college. Perez attended Southwestern College and Texas A&M Commerce. From 2013-17 Perez passed for 10,561 yards, threw 101 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions.
Final Note
The Renegades are 3-3 and face the Seattle Sea Dragons on Friday. Arlington’s quarterback situation must improve if they want to win games. Drew Plitt will start, and Kevin Anderson will serve as backup. Arlington has four games left to make a push for the playoffs.
