Arkansas’ Raheim Sanders was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List on Wednesday. This watch list recognizes the top running back talent in college football. The sophomore RB had a terrific freshman season for the Razorbacks last year. On 114 rushing attempts, Sanders accumulated 578 yards and five touchdowns. This nod is just a testament to the talent Sanders possesses.
Sanders had a breakout game against Ole Miss last season. Sanders amassed 139 yards on 17 carries during the game. Although Arkansas lost in a heartbreaking fashion, 52-51, the game showcased Sanders’ potential.

While Sanders may have the talent to accumulate big numbers, Arkansas’ offensive system may prevent him from doing that. Last season, Arkansas had four players produce over 500 yards on the ground, including QB KJ Jefferson. While RB Trelon Smith departed, RB AJ Green may take Smith’s carries. Moreover, Domonique Johnson, who was the starter over Sanders last season, also returns to the Hill.
However, Sanders versatility could also give him more time on the field. Sanders played receiver a lot in HS before switching full-time to RB in college. His work at receiver has given him ball skills the other RBs on the roster don’t possess. His high school and college film suggest Sanders is comfortable running fade and vertical routes. Moreover, Sanders has shown he can be lined up at boundary Z receiver spot, where he can use his body to make plays. He can also line up in the slot, where he played a lot in high school.
