A former Arizona Cardinals VP accused the owner of cheating
The Arizona Cardinals made a few major changes to their organization this offseason. The team fired head coach Kliff Kingsbury this offseason and replaced him with former Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. There’s been some drama inside the building, with players commenting negatively about quarterback Kyler Murray, even as the team looks to build around him. Another drama is being made public this offseason.

A new bombshell report by Adam Schefter with ESPN highlights some severe accusations from a former Cardinals’ front office member. Former Cardinals vice president Terry McDonough accused their owner, Michael Bidwell, of cheating and discrimination. McDonough alleges during the 2018 season, Bidwell advised McDonough and then head coach Steve Wilks to communicate with a suspended general manager Steve Keim via a burner phone. (McDonough served with the Cardinals through the 2021 season.)
According to the report, the Cardinals public relations adviser, Jim McCarthy, released a statement calling the allegations “widely false”:
“Our position was consistent with many efforts we’ve made to accommodate Terry during his time with the team, despite difficulties in his personal life and his often volatile demeanor toward colleagues,” the statement from McCarthy said.
“That’s why we are saddened to see that Terry is now lashing out at our organization with disparagements and threats that are absurdly at odds with the facts. This unnecessary and vindictive action by Terry was intended to malign his co-workers, our owner Michael Bidwill, and our team with outlandish accusations.”
A tough offseason for the Cardinals
This is another story in a tumultuous offseason for the Arizona Cardinals, who are not expected to be competitive early next season. Murray is expected to miss the first part of the season while rehabbing from injury. Players might have their own feelings about Bidwell’s ownership, as the Cardinals ranked 31st in the NFL for the recently released NFLPA survey report card.
