From 2021 to 2022, the Arizona Cardinals’ defense housed one of the greatest players in the history of the NFL, pass rusher J.J. Watt. Arizona may have rostered Watt during his twilight years, but what the future NFL Hall of Famer lacked in on-the-field performance, he more than made up as an exceptional human being off-the-field. Despite being out of the league for two years, Watt hasn’t stopped being an incredible role model and a beacon of hope for humanity.
On Thursday, an English youth posted on Twitter that “Justin Watt” donated nearly $7,000 to his GoFundMe to help spread mental health awareness. Later in the evening, the beneficiary of the donation discovered that the mega donator was none other than former Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans superstar J.J. Watt.
Former Arizona Cardinals DE Makes Generous Donation to Support Mental Health Awareness
According to the Twitter user Thehullboy, who is running a marathon in honor of mind and mental health, shared that longtime NFL superstar J.J. Watt made an unsolicited 5,000-pound donation to his cause:
Look, I’ve cried a heck of a lot last few years, but blooming heck. £5000 pounds donated by a person called Justin tonight. I have no information bar a name, so if you are Justin. I just want to thank you personally, you have helped many lives with your donation. We are at £19,600, just truly speechless. So grateful for anyone who’s donated, commented or just helped spread awareness of mental health. You are a legend.
After realizing that former Arizona Cardinals defensive end J.J. Watt donated, the English philanthropist thanked the NFL star. Watt replied, calling him an inspiration while saying he commends him for making the “world a better place.” Watt has long made philanthropy a pillar of his being, forming the Justin J. Watt Foundation in 2010, providing after-school possibilities for kids in diverse communities. Watt also raises nearly $1 million in donations yearly via his annual Justin J. Watt Foundation Charity Classic softball game. Watt also raised $37 million to help those in dire situations following Hurricane Harvey.
This week’s donation by Watt is not the first time the three-time Defensive Player of the Year has lifted the spirits of children. In 2018, Watt offered to pay for the funerals of those killed in the Sante Fe High School shooting while inviting those affected by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 to join him for a relaxing evening at NRG Stadium to play football. Watt spent 12 years in the NFL, playing for the Houston Texans and the Arizona Cardinals. He led the league in sacks twice and TFLs three times.
