The Arizona Cardinals are going into the 2024 season with hopes that the direction of their franchise is turning around. A healthy Kyler Murray will do a lot for the expectations of your franchise. That coupled with drafting one of the best wide receiver prospects of recent memory will get fans excited for what this offense can look like.
However, injuries are unfortunately apart of the game, and the Cardinals just suffered a gruesome one.
Arizona Cardinals Fans React To Brutal Season Ending Injury
Our very own Jackson Loschko initially covered the news for our site:
BJ Ojulari suffered an apparent knee injury during their practice on Friday. He was carted off the field and underwent tests to determine the severity. Unfortunately, the worst news happened, he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee and will miss the entire 2024 season.
Ojulari, a 2nd-round pick from last season, didn’t play much as a rookie but showed promise in 37% of defensive snaps. He entered the offseason in the mix for the starting EDGE rusher job and a potential breakout candidate.
Dennis Gardeck will likely start alongside Zaven Collins in the absence of Ojulari. Gardeck, a former undrafted free agent from 2018, enters his seventh year in the league and led the team in sacks a season ago. He enters a crucial 2024 season since he’s in the final year of his 3-year, $10 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
Losing Ojulari will negatively impact their pass rush.
Ojulari, drafted in the second round of the 2023 draft, played all 17 games without starting any of them. With 40 tackles and four sacks, he saw action on 409 defensive snaps and 92 special teams snaps.
At the time of Ojulari’s injury, right tackle Jonah Williams was blocking him.
“It’s football,” Williams said, via Darren Urban of the team website. “I hope he’s all right. He’s a great player, and I enjoy playing with him.”
