The Dallas Cowboys are trading for a player familiar with new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s system. On Friday afternoon, the Cowboys executed a trade with the Minnesota Vikings for a former second-round pick.

Zimmer is known for running a tight ship. Per Todd Archer with ESPN, star pass rusher Micah Parsons said during training camp that Zimmer is purposeful with his coaching:

I would say Zim is definitely one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve been around,” Parsons said. “The same with Paul. Zim doesn’t say a lot, but he says why. He’s not a coach who is just going to tell you to do something. He’s going to tell you why he does it and why it has success. There is always a purpose behind what he says, so when he does speak, you really listen to it and gravitate to it.”

On Friday, the Cowboys gave Zimmer a player who knows his system.

According to Tom Pelissero with the NFL Network, the Cowboys are trading Nahshon Wright to the Vikings for Andrew Booth, pending physicals.

The Cowboys selected Wright in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He’s appeared in 32 games and started in three. He’s made 37 tackles, one interception, and has one pass breakup in his NFL career. Pro Football Focus gave Wright a 60.1 grade for the 2023 season.

Booth is a former second-round pick

The Vikings selected Booth in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s appeared in 23 games and started in two. He’s recorded 20 tackles and one pass defensed. Pro Football Focus gave Booth a 68.6 grade for the 2023 season.

The Cowboys’ depth in the secondary has been an issue for the team in the offseason. The Cowboys had more worries in the secondary when veteran cornerback Gareon Conley announced his retirement in July.

Booth should immediately help the Cowboys’ defense, as he understands Zimmer’s scheme.
