With the 2025 college football season still several months away, it is never too early to talk about who will be the top player in college football for the 2025 season. 247sports writer Brad Crawford created his Top 10 players list for the upcoming college football season. He listed Ohio State’s star wide receiver as the number one player. Crawford said,
“College football’s most electrifying freshman sparkled throughout the 2024 season, but his playoff performances were extraordinary. Jeremiah Smith saved his best for Ohio State’s final few games and helped the Buckeyes win the national championship. The No. 1 overall player in the 2024 recruiting cycle, Smith is a weapon opposing defenses must always be aware of. Not only does he bring a physical presence in third-down situations, but Smith’s a home run threat at the second level. He’s the total package and could be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.”
It would not be a surprise to see him drafted number one overall in 2027. If he was eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft, there is no doubt that Smith would be a Top 5 selection. During the 2024 college football season with Ohio State, he caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards, and 15 touchdowns, along with 17.3 yards per reception. Smith also rushed for 47 yards on six carries and one touchdown, along with averaging 7.8 yards per carry.
He is 6’3″ and weighs 215 lbs. It will be intriguing to see what he does for an encore during his sophomore college football season. Three wide receivers have been drafted number one overall in NFL history. The last one to be drafted number one overall was Keyshawn Johnson in 1996 and Smith has a chance to do that in 2027 also.
