The Cleveland Browns quarterback situation is one of the more interesting ones across the NFL. Cleveland traded for Deshaun Watson before the 2022 NFL season and he played for the Houston Texans before coming to Cleveland, Ohio.

Watson being on the Browns has completely backfired and it was ridiculous that Cleveland decided to give him a fully guaranteed contract. He has not been healthy and has also had off the field issues with his time with the Browns. For now, Watson is not in the picture to be the starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season. Even though he is not in the picture, is there a chance that he can return at some point during the 2025 NFL season with his current Achillies injury?
Cleveland Browns Insider Provides Medical Update For Quarterback Deshaun Watson

Zac Jackson of The Athletic provided an update about Watson’s health before the 2025 NFL season begins. With training camp underway, Watson is not in the competition to be the Browns starting quarterback. Jackson said,
“The Cleveland Browns have placed quarterback Deshaun Watson on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list for the start of training camp.
The expected designation came Tuesday as the full squad reported for the start of camp. Watson suffered a second Achilles tear in January while rehabbing from the Achilles injury he suffered last October in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Though an exact timetable for medical clearance is unknown, the Browns have long known that Watson would not be ready for the start of camp or for the start of the 2025 season. Players on the active-PUP list count against the 90-man roster during training camp and can be activated any time, but Watson’s expected rehab schedule extends beyond this summer.”
Watson played in seven games for Cleveland during the 2024 NFL season before the injury. He completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,148 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. Watson also rushed for 148 yards on 31 carries and one touchdown, along with averaging 4.8 yards per carry. His career with the Browns has been a major disappointment after having a good start to his NFL career with the Texans.
It would feel like a major surprise if Watson started a single game for Cleveland during the 2025 NFL season. Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, Kenny Pickett, and Joe Flacco are competing currently for the starting quarterback job. If the Browns have to start Watson in 2025, it means everything has gone right with him and wrong with everything else at the quarterback position.
