Let the Games Begin

The 2022 college football regular season has kicked off and Albama is back like the immortal villain in a horror movie. The Alabama Crimson Tide dominated the Utah State Aggies in a 55-0 victory. Heisman Trophy 2021 winner and 2022 candidate, quarterback Bryce Young, impressed by completing 18-28 passes for 195 passing yards, 100 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns. Meanwhile, The University of Texas Longhorns steam rolled the University of Louisianna Monroe Warhawks in a 52-10 win in Austin. Quinn Ewers and his glorious hair passed for 225 yards and threw for 2 touchdowns. Running backs Bijan Robinson, Jonathan Brooks and Roschon Johnson combined for 21 carries and ran for 137 yards, and each had one touchdown. This Saturday at noon, the Crimson Tide are headed to take on the Longhorns.
College Game Day Headed to Austin

ESPN College Game Day announced last Saturday night that they will be headed to Austin for this highly anticipated David and Goliath throwdown. SB Nation’s Alex Kirshner reports that Texas and Ohio State agreed to push back a scheduled home to home series this year. This change in scheduling is making room for the Texas and Alabama series in 2022 and 2023. The all-time series between Texas and Alabama still favors the Longhorns with the record of 7-1-1 but Alabama has ruled college football for years. The last time these teams played was the 2010 BCS National Championship Game. The Crimson Tide took down the Longhorns 37 to 21 to win the title.
Alabama: King of the Mountain

Alabama with 6 national championships is still king of the mountain with coach Nick Saban leading the way. Their overall official record under Saban is 184-25 on the field, with 21 bowl game appearances and 9 SEC championships. Longhorn head coach Steve Sarkisian, who was the offensive coordinator for Nick Saban, has a lot to prove after a disappointing 5-7 2021 season. I am not sure that this is the game that catches Alabama by surprise but who knows, sometimes the stars align in Texas just like last season at Texas A&M.
Texas Improvement

Coach Sarkisian should have some high-flying tricks up his sleeve to test the skills of the Alabama cornerbacks in this game. Tony Tsoukalas reports in an article,“2022 Alabama Crimson Tide Position Preview: Defensive Backs” that Alabama had to replace both starting cornerbacks following the departure of Jalyn Armour-Davis and Josh Jobe. The Texas Longhorns have potential to have an 8-to-10-win season if they improve like critics and fans expect. Longhorn quarterback Quinn Ewers was one of the highest-graded quarterback recruits drawing comparison to Matthew Stafford and has a reputation of having an elite pocket presence. Ewers should get the quarterback position back on track for the Longhorns as long as he lives up to his potential. The defense on the other hand is really going to have to show up after allowing 421.7 yards per game last season. Saturday will be a true test for the Longhorns and a barometer for what’s to come for this program.
