Following the conclusion of the 2023 season, legendary Alabama football head coach and seven-time national champ Nick Saban hung up his straw safari hat and whistle, retiring at 72 years old. Alabama quickly shifted its sights on Kalen DeBoer of the Washington Huskies. The Crimson Tide locked DeBoer down on an eight-year, $87 million deal, becoming just the program’s third head coach in the past two decades. Winners of at least 11 games each season since 2008, Alabama has remained stellar under DeBoer, ranking fourth in the current rendition of the AP Top 25 and spotting a 3-0 record.

However, the sportsbooks have not fully bought in on DeBoer, the roster, or both, with them opening up as a field goal underdog in their post-bye week matchup against rival Georgia. Alabama football fans are unfamiliar with playing a home underdog role, as noted by the Crimson Tide faithful’s expressions on social media.

According to Alabama staff writer Mike Rodak of 247Sports:

Caesars has now posted a line for Alabama-Georgia, and Alabama is a home underdog for the first time since 2007. It marks Alabama’s 5th game as an underdog since 2021 after the Tide was an underdog in only one game from Dec. 2009-Dec. 2021:

On Friday, Vegas announced the spread for multiple significant Week 5 matchups, including the highly anticipated contest against Alabama football and the top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. To the surprise of many, the Alabama Crimson Tide opened as a 2.5 underdog against their SEC foe. Alabama last played a home underdog role during the 2007 season, their first under leadman Nick Saban. Alabama lost the game 41-34 as a touchdown underdog to the LSU Tigers. However, in last year’s SEC Championship, the Crimson Tide bested the Bulldogs despite being a 5.5-point dog.

Alabama has played the underdog against the Georgia Bulldogs in their past three meetings. However, none came to Bryant-Denny Stadium. The Crimson Tide won the 2021 and 2023 SEC Championship tilts but lost the ’21 national title. Meanwhile, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is 1-5 against Alabama. Nevertheless, Alabama Crimson Tide devotees are dumbfounded by the spread, expressing their disbelief on Twitter:
