Week 5 saw arguably the season’s most anticipated game: Georgia travelled to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama. Despite the Crimson Tide’s win, college football analyst Joel Klatt spoke about which program he feels better about after Saturday night’s colossal match-up.
Klatt surprised many Alabama fans by saying he still feels better about the Bulldogs over Alabama coming away from that game. He suggested the cream always rises to the top in this sport, with Georgia being his choice of cream, despite losing 41-34.
Analyst Joel Klatt Believes Georgia Has More Gears to Click Into
Speaking on his podcast, the “Joel Klatt Show,” Klatt believed Georgia was starting to show they were the better team in the second half of the game. He had a long speech about how the more a game goes on, resulting in more snaps, the more opportunities a team gets, and the odds are going to favor the better team, which, in his opinion, started to show in the second half for Georgia.
To cut to the chase, Klatt believes that no matter how bad a team starts a game or a season, they will genuinely show they are a better team over time. However, that is an opinion that right now can not be proved as being correct; time will tell if Georgia is a better team than Alabama despite the loss.
Georgia played better in the second half, outscoring Alabama 27-11, but flip the argument around, and the Crimson Tide didn’t play to the high standard they saw in the first half of the game. In that case, analyst Joel Klatt’s point can be made to look redundant. The game can be described as simple as a game of two halves, with Bama and Georgia having one better half than the other.
Klatt did say that Alabama fans would be incensed that he had this opinion, and they have every right to be with Bama winning the game and remaining unbeaten. He also ranked Alabama as his No. 1 team in college ahead of Texas, so he was impressed despite his Georgia take.
Is the SEC Championship Game a Three-Horse Race?
Georgia is 3-1 after losing to Alabama and stumbling past Kentucky in Week 3. The Bulldogs have two struggling teams on the schedule next: Auburn and Mississippi State in Athens. Later, they play road games at Texas and Ole Miss and face Tennessee. They will need to play much better than they have through four games if they want to back up Klatt’s take.
We have not reached the halfway stage of the 2024 season, but the SEC Championship Game looks to feature two of Alabama, Georgia, and Texas. All three have two or three tough games to play, but Alabama’s win over the Bulldogs gives them the edge in tie-breakers.
The Bulldogs’ Week 8 game at Texas has become even more vital. The Longhorns have a bye week, face Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, and are projected to be unbeaten. Kirby Smart’s team will have to realistically win that game to give them a significant chance of making the SEC title game. Lose that, and they will need both Bama and Texas to lose two games.
