One of the biggest College Football upsets of week one came when unranked FSU took to #8 ranked Alabama. 31-17 was the final score, however, that didn’t stop Alabama fans from pinpointing one play that they think shifted everything.
“Completely Rigged” Alabama Fans Demand Action After Clear No Call In 31-17 Loss To FSU

A controversial targeting call is one of the best indicators that college football is back. In today’s Alabama-FSU game, we got our first big-time targeting call of the year, or lack there of one:
Midway through the fourth quarter of the game, Alabama was trailing when Crimson Tide QB Ty Simpson tried to find No. 1 wideout Ryan Williams in the middle of the field for a big gain. His throw was just a bit too wide for Williams and fell to the ground.
Unfortunately for Williams, two FSU players were right there too. One of them wrapped him up and the other struck him in the head, sending Williams to the ground and leaving him struggling to get up.
A flag was thrown and the safety who made the hit was initially penalized for targeting. But after a review of the play, the referees rescinded the flag and ruled that the play was legal.

Fans quickly took to social media to express either outrage or confusion over the initial call. Many believe that it must have been targeting if the play caused a concussion, while others just don’t understand what targeting is anymore if that’s not it:
“Listen I hate Bama too but in what universe is that not targeting ????” one user wrote on X.
“Targeting still the most confusing review of all time,” another remarked.
“The most intentional attempt at targeting I have ever seen. Williams is lucky that guy didn’t make full contact like he wanted,” a third argued.
“In the Alabama Florida State game the most egregious late hit occurred on a dropped pass where the safety rocked/injured the receiver 5 sec after the whistle but it was called targeting on the field. Targeting didn’t occur so they waved the flag entirely. WTF?”
“How is it not targeting if he’s concussed?”
Targeting has and probably always be more of a vibes call than anything else. If it looks like targeting, it might be targeting – and even then, sometimes it’s not.
As for Ryan Williams, we can only hope that he’s okay.
