Trade rumors between the San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk were the subject of many headlines in the 2024 offseason. Much like Aaron Rodgers in the past several offseasons, Aiyuk’s status is again the subject of recycled headlines this spring.
The notable difference between last year and 2025 is that Aiyuk signed a four-year contract extension with the 49ers last year. That makes any trade for Aiyuk a tall order as the star wide receiver recovers from a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee.
Before the injury, Aiyuk wasn’t playing the best football of his career. Through seven games, the All-Pro caught 25 passes for 374 yards and no touchdowns.
The 49ers faced an uphill battle to trade Aiyuk by Tuesday, the team’s unofficial deadline to make a move before Aiyuk earns his $22.85 million bonus.
The San Francisco 49ers are making a decision for all of 2025

Per ESPN‘s Adam Schefter, the 49ers are not expected to make a trade by April 1 (won’t X be fun that day), and the team won’t try and move on from him before the 2026 offseason.
“The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to trade wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk by Tuesday, when he is due a $22.85 million bonus, barring a late deal materializing, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday.
“Aiyuk, who signed a four-year, $120 million extension with the 49ers last year, is due the $22.85 million bonus if he is on the team’s roster Tuesday. Once the 49ers pay that bonus it is expected that Aiyuk would spend the 2025 season in San Francisco, the sources told Schefter.”
It’s unclear if Aiyuk will play in 2025 as he recovers from the serious knee injury. San Francisco would have preferred to add a draft pick to their arsenal for April, as the team is without another key pass target from 2024, Deebo Samuel, who was traded to the Washington Commanders.
