Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel faced harsh criticism from the ESPN broadcast booth during Monday Night Football. The coach’s fourth-quarter decisions left former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman visibly frustrated as the Dolphins’ playoff hopes officially came to an end with a 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Aikman didn’t hold back when questioning the logic behind Miami’s late-game strategy.
Troy Aikman calls out Mike McDaniel’s clock management
The chaos began with Miami trailing 28-15 late in the fourth quarter. The Dolphins still had all three of their timeouts after not using any on either of their previous two touchdown drives. They also had the two-minute warning upcoming.
Miami forced a critical three-and-out from Pittsburgh with 2:32 remaining on the clock. The situation presented a clear opportunity for the Dolphins to preserve time for a potential comeback attempt.
Instead, everything fell apart.
However, they burned all three of their timeouts despite forcing a three-and-out from the Steelers to take the possession back. The baffling decision eliminated any realistic chance of mounting a comeback.
Aikman struggled to understand the rationale behind Mike McDaniel’s choices.
“I’m flabbergasted with what we’ve witnessed in this fourth quarter with the Dolphins and now they want to call timeouts?” Aikman said. “It is about as ridiculous a fourth quarter as I’ve seen in a long time”.

The confusion extended beyond just the management of timeouts. Miami’s entire offensive approach in the fourth quarter drew scrutiny from the broadcast team.
“This is just a bizarre last few series. They don’t go hurry-up. Now they’re going hurry-up and calling timeouts. It’s just, it’s hard to understand exactly what the philosophy or what they’re trying to do,” Aikman added.
The Dolphins appeared to lack any sense of urgency despite trailing by multiple scores. They continued huddling and taking their time between plays when most teams would have accelerated their tempo.
“They kind of waved the white flag as far as the fourth quarter is concerns,” Aikman stated earlier in the quarter.
Joe Buck agreed with his broadcast partner that Mike McDaniel’s decision-making throughout the final fifteen minutes defied logical explanation. The play-by-play announcer recapped the series of questionable choices that led to Miami’s elimination from playoff contention.
The Dolphins had been on a good run entering Week 15, having recorded three wins in a row. Miami had to win out to stand a chance of making the playoffs, but McDaniel’s team is now out of postseason contention.
This marks the second consecutive year Miami has missed the playoffs under McDaniel. The head coach led the team to the postseason in each of his first two seasons after being hired in February 2022, but recent struggles have raised questions about his job security.
