Adam Thielen Plans to Retire After Season Eyes Home With a Playoff Threat

Adam Thielen returned to Minnesota this season after a late-summer trade from Carolina. He is a rotational piece and was made a healthy scratch in the Vikings’ recent loss. The 35-year-old veteran admitted this year was likely his last, and then he pushed for the chance to finish it the right way.

Adam Thielen said this will be his last NFL season and he would like to finish it with a team that is competing to advance in the postseason.” reported Adam Schefter on X.

The Vikings waived the 35-year-old wideout Monday after his reps asked for a release so he could chase meaningful snaps in the final stretch. The team framed it as a sign of respect for a club legend; Thielen framed it as taking control of his finale.

Thielen started four of 11 games after the reunion trade and finished with eight catches for 69 yards on 18 targets. Six of those grabs were first downs, small-volume, high-effort work that shows why he still matters in short-yardage and situational packages.

He asked for the chance to play more. The Vikings agreed, noting that the request came through the player’s representation and that Minnesota wanted to allow Thielen to “pursue more playing time elsewhere” in what he has called his final season. That’s the waiver mechanism doing its job: another team can claim him, or he clears waivers and signs where he wants.

A contender needing experienced hands, red-zone savvy, or a locker-room stabilizer can pick him up without a seismic cap hit. Thielen’s résumé, two Pro Bowls, years-long chemistry in Minnesota, and a reputation as a dependable, savvy route-runner buy him a straight audition.

Thielen has said for months he’s “winding down” his career and would reassess year-to-year. Now he’s put that assessment into action: make a claim, earn playoff snaps, and walk off on the terms he chooses. In his social message, he closed with a line that explains everything:

With gratitude and love and I’ll be back to retire!” wrote Adam Thielen.

Adam Thielen is not quietly fading. He’s trying to finish with a team that can make noise. Contenders who want a veteran receiver with short-area reliability now know he’s available, and he’s coming with unfinished business.
